lemmywinks Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Been trying to wire up my jazz bitsa i've just built but being a total newbie at this stuff i have made an error somewhere. I followed a diagram off t'internet but it's not working correctly. The neck pickup barely does anything and the tone acts as some sort of volume. I bought the pre-wired control plate but i seem to have muched it up! Anybody know what i've done wrong? The neck pickup has red/white wires and the bridge has black/white. I assumed the red and black were the hot ones P1ss poor drawing below: Quote
Ou7shined Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Silly question: the neck pickup isn't an EMG by any chance? Quote
lemmywinks Posted November 5, 2010 Author Posted November 5, 2010 Not EMGs, they came with a neck and body i bought, this one (except it now has a killer 70s Japanese neck on it!): http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;hl=neck+body The seller said they might be KA but i didn't make any assumptions. I'm dying to get this done properly as the bass itself is almost finished and sounds brilliant! Quote
Ou7shined Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Have you tested the pups? Wire each one up (one at a time) direct to the output jack to make sure they're firing on all cylinders. Quote
lemmywinks Posted November 5, 2010 Author Posted November 5, 2010 Good idea, i'll do that after i've settled my crying little girl as soldering irons and 2 month old babies definitely don't mix! Quote
lemmywinks Posted November 5, 2010 Author Posted November 5, 2010 Both pups fine thankfully. Stumped! Quote
Ou7shined Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Just back from the fireworks. Hmmm that just leaves the pots. Wire just the vol ones up and miss out the tone. Once you've eliminated them bring the tone pot back in. You should be able to find your spanner in the works that way. Quote
lemmywinks Posted November 5, 2010 Author Posted November 5, 2010 The bridge vol and tone are behaving now, i've rewired it and they function as normal. However the neck vol is still dead. I wired in a different pot and got the same result so i'm giving up tonight. I'll have a beer and figure it out in the morning! Cheers for the help Rich! Quote
icastle Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 I think you might have your red\black and white wires the wrong way round. Take a look at this: http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wirin...c=std_jazz_bass This would make the white wires hot and the red and black ones not (as they're soldered to the pot casing). HTH Quote

HTH
That's how they are soldered, as in the diagram in my first post. In fact i used that SD link when i originally wired them up! I tried reversing them just in case and still nothing I'll do a full rewire with new wire and hook each pot up to a jack individually first to test. As i said the bridge vol and tone pots are functioning normally and i've swapped the whole neck vol pot and wires for another set but still nowt! The pup definitely works too! The neck pup is a Kent Armstrong btw, not sure about the bridge unit Quote
