dmccombe7
Hi all, Been playing bass on/off since 1975. Started off with a school mate who wanted to play guitar and I offered to play bass. 35 yrs later the same guy gets in touch with me and we've reformed for some small jam sessions. Musical tastes have changed over the yrs. I've tended to play rock / blues with bands over the yrs with some progressive rock but prefer playing something a bit more taxing like jazz / funk at home. Fav bassists :- Jeff Berlin, Geddy Lee, several "new" jazz or funk bassists - Steve Bailey, Victor Wooten, Doug Johns to name but a few. Had several basses over the yrs :- Columbus Jazz (gotta start somewhere !!), Shergold twin 4&8, Aria SB1000, Fender P fretless, WAL custom fretless, Rickenbacker, Fender Jazz, Ibanez Musician, Yamaha, Current basses :- Warwick Thumb (89 with EMG's), Overwater Progress 6 fretless (for my 50th this year), Fender Jazz, ESP 6 string, Warwick Rock bass and Yamaha. Amps :- varied over the yrs - everything from Marshall, Sound City, Roland pre-amps with Orange power amps, Peavey, TE's, Ashdown, Warwick more or less all custom cabs with exception of Marshall stack way back when there wasn't a lot of choice. Still have the Ashdown MAG300 15" combo with 2x10" deep and Warwick Pro Fet IV used in various set ups of bi-amping. Currently looking for something more portable - Markbass, TC, GB or maybe GK or Ampeg SVT. Still trying to decide, hence reason for joining basschat. Lots of valuable info for old fella like me. Appreciate all the helpful advice everyone seems to offer. Just like a big family. Thanks Dave

dmccombe7
Thanks for replies so far. As requested some pics of my basses. Not sure if I've added the photos correctly - bit of trial & error on my part. Hopefully they are reasonably ok. Don't actually have many photos of my basses - maybe something I should remedy. The Overwater pic was the official photo I took for Overwater themselves. The 2nd pic shows my 3 main basses - Overwater, Warwick & Fender. All used for different styles. Being a traditional 4 stringer up until beginning of this year I opted to buy an ESP 6 string fretted on Ebay to try as none available in Glasgow shops at that time. Tried it, loved it and wondered why I hadn't done this before. Haven't played fretless for many yrs and as this was my 50th I thought I would go the whole hog and get something really different that would force me to play at a higher level and hopefully improve my technical ability. To date its working. Not easy but I'm improving and getting there. Overwater is a tremendous bass and if you haven't tried one then strongly recommend giving them a chance if you can. Not cheap but then again I guess quality never is. Warwick has been my main bass since 1989 when I had good earnings from playing / recording and PA hires at the time when Raves were popular. Lot more money to be made from Raves than playing in bands. Fender is a Geddy Lee signature version which isn't as good quality as my first Jazz but still a great bass to play. Delberthot
Always good to have another Scottish member on board. I am a wee bit younger than you having been born the same year you started playing

I am a wee bit younger than you having been born the same year you started playing
Looks like you've had a busy life. Quite a collection of basses over the yrs. Similar influences and taste in music by look of it. If I had to pick one major influence over the yrs would probably be Jack Bruce. Mainly after he left Cream. He was playing multi-finger right-hand styles long before most and doesn't seem to get the recognition for it. He's also a very aggresive bassist. Saw him live many moons ago with his Session band from the Cozy Powell era. Fantastic. What a showman. Cheers Davie
