richardd
Hi all ,My name is Rich, and I have just bought a GK800RB from the States which is of course 110v ,I have looked inside and the tansformer does not have the neccesary 4 tags on the mains side,I have spoken to Panic music and thats what they seem to be .Saying I cannot use a stepdown transformer, because I could get earthing and live chassie problems,so according to them it means a new transformer and other stuff to make it safe, seems a bit over the top to me .if you have any advice I would be more than grateful,Thanks Rich Edited November 7, 2010 by richardd
Stewart
Something like this should be OK (though you'd need to get/make a 16A CE to 13A adaptor for this one): Transformer But it'll be heavy and generally a pain... Ultimately I'd get someone to change the amp transformer

The fasting showman
Hi Richard, sorry to dig up this old issue, I assume the amp is long gone now. I use a UK voltage 800RB and sometimes a US model 400RB (same era) with a 2KW step down, I love both amps; they've caused me to fall off the valve amp bandwagon after 2 decades, a long, long story! I'd just like to know how this saga resolved...the aforementioned repair emporium gave me some advice about an early '70s SVT I used to have and it was, er, a little wide of the mark, and also OTT. My usual repair bloke fixed it very easily, can't praise him highly enough. I'm not saying that to discredit them, to be fair it was over the phone. My 400RB likewise only has the 2 tabs and is earthed to the chassis. I'd be grateful for any help on this, up to now I'd been blissfully ignorant but resenting lugging a heavy stepdown around! Cheers, Martin.
gelfin
You can buy the correct transformer from Polar Audio. I have just done this with a USA 1001RB The replacement transformer has multi taps to suit all GK amps and costs around £80 http://www.polaraudio.co.uk/
The fasting showman
Thanks for that, I'll contact them later. I cannot believe how loud the old 400RBs are through an Ampeg fridge or a Marshall VBC 412...wish I'd dropped on one years ago. Cheers, Martin
