benh
Anyone had any experience with these - good or bad? They look pretty good for the money, don't see many Carvins this side of the pond though. The link's here: http://www.carvinworld.com/catalog/guitars...php?model=bk50a I know of a website that supplies them in the UK, thinking of pulling the trigger on one of these next year, but I thought I'd see if anyone else has had a go and whether the results were any good. Cheers!
Lfalex v1.1
For that sort of money, the components will want to be absolutely top notch. All the more so when you consider that you're doing the bulk of the labour outside of the neck finishing / fretting. I didn't see much in the way of options, just 4 or 5 string, active or passive. I'd like to think I missed fretless & maple board options etc. Looks easy enough for anyone who's set up a bass before and who has some basic soldering experience. The lengthy bit will be finishing the body, with all the finishing/sanding/finishing/waiting to dry/rubbing back/rinsing/repeating.
benh
Yeah, that's what I thought. You can actually request different parts through an online form, so if you want different woods, fingerboards etc but it bumps the price up a lot. As far as I can tell they're the same components/woods etc that they use in the "premade" B40/50 range, which retail at over £1K. Do you think for a project it would be better to just get a knackered old POS and do it up? £650 is a lot to spend on something that might go wrong I guess... bartelby
Have you considered Warmoth parts?
Mog
A mate got one of the guitar kits about 10 years ago and every part was top notch. Its still his main gigging guitar. Never came across the bass kits but I reckon the quailty will be there.
Jean-Luc Pickguard
I've made a Fretless Precision and Tele guitar using kits from brandoniguitars.co.uk/ in Wembley. The tele used all the standard hardware that comes with the kit and it came out very nicely for £200 (plus the cost of some Danish Oil & woodstain). I got a sunburst body & finished fretless neck with ebony fingerboard for the precision and used a lot of upgraded hardware.
