OldGit
I thought you had a VMJ at one point? I'd certainly wear mine in public, and I fully intend to. If you didn't I apologise, but gear name is not the be all and end all these days, I prefer my Squier VMJ over my MIJ Fender Aerodyne.
Nah I looked at getting one for a backup bass and for my current project which is learning to read bass music but no one was selling one at a priceI'd pay. Then I had some very good luck and also discovered SX basses. The luck paid for Shuker number two and the SX's are fine for my 4 string needs. Also it's something different. I had a JV Squier P for a few years but I always played my Fender on stage. I don't mind being a bass lable snob, it's something I've become aware of as I got older... but 90% of my clothes wardrobe comes from Peacocks/Matalan/Primart

paul h
£26.97 import tax. So it's cost me a hair over £127 all in and should be with me early next week. I reckon if I had ordered Monday it would have been delivered today. Damn weekends! Still can't decide on the pickguard though. Black, tort or just leave it white. Leaving it white is mainly a monetary concern. What started out as a £100 bass will be getting closer to £150 if I replace it. But it would look cool with black or tort. It would help if I could find out what style of plate would be the best fit, US, Mex or a generic "copy". I am also tempted to to leave it so it's 100% stock. Just to annoy the label snobs! I'd play a Tesco Value bass if i could get one! p.

OldGit
Yes, caution advised. The J i bought was advertised as Vintage White. I am going to replece the bridge and tuners this week when the stuff arrives. Tuners are functional but a bit cheap feeling, they turn a bit clunkily. Put the Wizard Thumper pup in....nice!!!
Yeah I'd echo that having bought it for a mate. Avoid that colour It's a bedroom bass colour. Fortunatley my mate is a bedroom bass player. Mine's arrived. Customs were holding it ransome. £45 to spring it. Worth it though ..
Hit&Run
Speaking to my man Shuker about the Gotoh Bridges he recommends the Fenderalike one they do rather than the 201 as the cast top of the 201 doesn't always fit the brige base well and looses transmission through. The fenderalike is a lot heaveir than the standard fender bent tin. I think it's called the Gotoh Standard Bridge.
I thought the 201 and 203 were both direct replacements for stock fender bridges? neilb
Ya buggers, you were right, it looks great with torty pickguard. Just waiting for the new tuners, bridge (fender style with spiral barrells) and string retainer (ordered one for back of the stock aswell!!!) Thumpers in already. Sounds awesome through my Trace. paul h
That looks sooooooooooooooooooooo good! Hopefully my tort plate will turn up tomorrow. I've been giving mine a good thrashing and I have no other plans to upgrade. To me it sounds great. Wonderful P funk slap tones. The pick up is fine, very loud and punchy. I am even happy with the stock strings for the first time ever! As I mentioned in my own thread, the neck is far too orangey on mine, which is a shame. Yours looks the nuts with the rosewood board...but I just wanted a maple one. Mainly for balance. 4 basses, 2 of each! Nice one. P.
neilb
Paul I have just got some Oakey Extreme contour sanding pads (Medium) from B&Q and gently sanded the back of the neck down. Its taken away that glossy varnish feel and is now slightly satin in texture. Much nicer to play now and hopefully will prevent sticking when I gig her on saturday night!!!! Give it a go. See, told you tortie was the one true path for sunburst with rosewood (he adds quickly as he ain't changing his black one) Strap peg on the back of the head stock is a cheeky one I didn't even do that on my "make me one like James Jamerson" Shuker ... You'll be telling people it's a hand made custom next, just like it says on the headstock ...
