Warwick Amps

I'm looking for a new bass amp and keep finding lots of Warwick ones about. They all seem to be pretty powerful, but do they sound any good? It's Profets and X-tremes mainly that I've found. I think I tried one before, but I can't be sure, it was borrowed from a promoter and I was a little bit drunk at the time, so I have very little recollection of the sound it produced. Any help?

They sound OK, not a bad amp. What sort of budget are you looking at?

I have a Tubepath which I picked up used for under £500.

It's bloody marvellous. It's extremely well-made (in Germany) and powerful, with a wide range of tones and the switchable 2nd-stage tube gives a great approximation of an all-tube head. It suits me and my old-skool tastes, but I imagine it'll do modern just as well.

My only complaint is that the DI (which sounds great) is a little on the hot side, but Warwick have given me instructions for a simple mod to calm it down a bit.

It's stange that there's not more of them about, but it means there's some bargains to be had.

Are you looking for a head unit or combo?

If you want a combo what speaker preference? 8's, 10's, 12's ect.

Whats your budget?

Apologies if I wasn't clear about what I was after, I realise now I wasn't. I'm after a head and cab, rather than a combo. Budget is about £4-500 for the head. I'm really after an Ashdown ABM 300 but I can't find one anywhere. Now I'm just trying to find a decent head of some sort, but I'm not entirely sure what. This was just meant to be a general thumbs up/thumbs down thing for Warwicks. Might have look about for Tubepath.

There's this one in the sale forum:

And a tubepath 10.1 also in the sale forum:

I'm aware of the ABM 300 on here. Sadly, I've spoken to jay249 about it, he's unwilling to post which is fair enough, and I'm to far away to collect it. Sad times. I have found a new ABM 500 on ebay for £399, which is an option I suppose. Oh, and the Tubepath's gone, but 1000W is a bit too much for me.

Well I run a profet 5.1 and Warwick 4*10 cab.

Not as loud as some and HEAVY, but it does a good job and I think it represents good value for money, especially as you can pick them up pretty cheap.

Stingrayfan seems to be running EXACTLY the same rig as me, so he might be able to comment too.

Mind u, I'm seriously considering a Markbass CMD 121P at the moment - I'm too old for all this heavy stuff. :)

Yep, I've got the same although I'm using a 4-ohm cab. Agree with you that they're good but not great and you're right, the heads are *heavy*. Mine does an OK job but I seem to be running it high. I always see people selling stuff saying "I've never run this head past 3". I never run mine under 7! :)

That'll just be Hartke gear. Their amps seem to get to 70% volume in the first quarter turn of the volume knob. My 350 Watt Hartke 3500 has the volume at 2/10 for pub gigs and about 3/10 for bigger venues. Stick with your Warwick amp as I'd much rather have a sweeping range of volume rather than loud, and louder.

I have a warwick profet 3.2 which was never below 10 and still wasn't loud enough in my band.

Its cheap for £180 with lots of bells and whistles, but heavy and underpowered.
Its O.K or my son to use, because his mates all have small practice amps on their guitars, and the drummer can't hit very loud - Yet ...

I've got a tubepath 5.1... it's amazing, somehow it seems to manage vintage sounding but cutting like hi-fi in one go. As for volume, I'm playing through a WCA 211 Pro and in a loud 5 piece band never go past 5/10, but if I do, it just keeps giving and giving.

I <3 my Tubepath :)

If anyone's in the market for a Warwick head, these guys are doing a special on the Profet 5.1 at the moment - £208. That's a lot of amp for the money. It's presumably to clear stock for the revised 5.3 that's just been launched at the NAMM show. Can't see any difference between the two, personally!
Oh get the new Hellborg ones

I have no idea what they sound like, but they sure look good.

edit: I just saw the price!
I had a personal demo from Jonas himself, with his sig gear and bass. Very interesting too! We seemed to share a lot of similar ideas about signal path etc. Its just that he puts his into practice lol lol!!!

Really nice sounding gear.. with a 'boutique' price tag to match!
