Hi guys, I'll start by saying I don't know what makes these right for me, but I really like the sound of them in a band setting. I've a set of wizard thumpers which I think maybe sound a bit too dark. The early 80s pickups seem to be a bit brighter??

Any ideas?

I`ve experimented with all different types of Precision pickup, and in the end have found the Standard US version to be the one that works best for me. Lots of lows and low mids, but importantly, still has plenty of high mids, giving good presence in the mix - especially on my maple-necked Precision. I think Fender Precision pickups aren`t generally as dark & deep as some of the aftermarket versions about. On their own they can seem to be a bit grating, but like you, I find that this helps them sit in the mix so well.

May be worth a try - I got one off here for about £30.00, by putting a post in the Items Wanted section.

Ive got a Thumper in my CV P and i get the "dark" comment. Personally im happy with the tone, for now, but i do plan on getting a Fralin again.

To me the Fralin is "the" P bass pickup and seems to nail the tone i have in my head. When i got my last Lakland DD it had a Hanson in it and i didnt really get on with it. I brought a Fralin (my first DD had one) and it transformed the bass IMO.

Not cheap though. I sold mine earlier this year and really, really, regret it.

I say if one comes up on here snap it up....before i do.
