iconic
I keep getting told to tap my foot to the beat...something I have never done...until an hour ago... ...tried it today to my favorite Duran choons....Rio, Last Chance on the Stairway and Night Version of Girls on Film, then Just Jack Writers Block and even Le Freak and tappin my plates puts me off and makes my leg ache too! ...if this regarded an essential part of bass playing? JordanRLS
Not at all, I don't do it either, and know plenty of others who don't. Whatever suits your playing style...
Delberthot
I start and stop during random parts of songs and often tap my foot on the off beat. I've even been known to do a heel - toe tap as well although that's usually well into a gig when my dogs are barking
Ian Savage
I'm a drummer as well as bass player so I find that my left foot's often going without me thinking about it. No idea whether it helps, but it goes...
Oakbear
I can't not if i'm into the music. That and nodding my head. I even do it practising at home. As often as not i end up jigging about like a moron at gigs, but the punters have seemed to like it!
SaxxyBass
I find myself tapping my foot with the bass but never with the Sax because it jogs the mouthpiece and ruins my intonation! Oh and I meant to say - I think you should do what feels right for you! Edited November 20, 2010 by SaxxyBass
SteveK
I really can't imagine not tapping my feet, or at least moving part of my body in time whilst playing. I've always assumed it was a kind of subconscious metronome thing going on.

risingson
I used to get shouted at by my mum and dad for tapping my bedroom floor whilst I played bass. I resorted to putting a pillow under my foot when I practiced.

But I play abit of kit too so it feels perfectly natural to me. Good for practicing groove and timing l find.
geoffbyrne
Talking of foottapping (I do - big time) I remember some kind of box with a mic in upon which you'd tap your foot for accompanyment. Anyone tell me what to look for on Ebay (or if you have one unused..... ) Hold on - just found something on Ebay - Logarythm. WHOA!!!!! £59.99!!!! Don't.think.so. G. the_skezz
I do it sometimes, but it doesn't really help me - it's more just a side effect of when I'm really into it and do it without thinking about it. Though the same goes for kicking over chairs, so you might be better off not listening to my playing advice...
charic
If I tap its usually with my heel.
stingrayPete1977
If you cant do the foot thing try the more AC/DC approach of standing legs astride with your left knee joint going instead of the foot tap? I Fookin' love it
woodster
I went to see The John Schofield Trio last week. The great Steve Swallow was on bass and I watched him like a hawk. There were some monster drum solos where the 'one' completely disappeared from the feel of the solo but Swallow was right on every accent and every stab...... He didnt tap his foot either....!! Mr. Foxen
Keep time by thrusting your crotch. It's not Doom, but it is awesome and manly. I sometimes find I'm standing on one leg and swinging the other one like a pendulum, playing pretty slow stuff though, heavy boots make it slower.
