Somebody must have played a trick on him.
There's absolutely no way that anyone would play something that badly out of tune!

It probably didn't sound so clear in 1963, if it's been remastered then suddenly you can hear all the problems with the original recording.

I remember reading about the air conditioning unit at Motown interfering with the recording equipment and making a lot of background noise, so they turned it off when they recorded and the temperature rocketed in a small studio with 10+ musicians in it. The result was everything went out of tune.

Plus it was probably recorded in one take, if everyone else's parts were great but the bass was a little out of tune.... tough!

What's sludge metal??!

It's only the open E that sounds terrible. I think he's probably giving it loads of attack which is just making it sound weird. The whole thing sounds a bit off, just the technology making it sound worse than it really was I reckon.

Sounds good to me.

In fact, except for that high voice, the whole thing really cooks. That's what made 60's soul music so great and inspired most of what came later.

This record would have been generally heard on car radios, transistor radios and Dansette record players all with 2" or 3" speakers so very little bass would have been noticed. There's very little bass drum for the same reason. That's why double bass was used for so long in Rock n Roll; no one could hear how awful most of it really was!

Anyway the rule of thumb when recording back then was, if the feel was good then nothing else mattered. I reckon the feel on this is great!

Sounds fine for the era to me. Bit of a floppy string maybe with over enthusiastic playing. As someone said, probably done in one take, and he probably only got $25 for the session. Has a great raw feel to it in my opinion.

Cor, what a fantastic track. First time I've heard the original.

My nomination for most spectacularly out of tune bass is Van Morrison and Them doing Dylan's It's All Over Now Baby Blue (much sampled, eg. by Beck)….

One of those in my mum's attic - two-tone cream / sonic blue.

As for the o.o.t. bass - well, it has a certain period charm.

I like it... adds to the rollercoaster feel!

As long as you're in time, the notes are a secondary consideration anyway.

Coupla times I've started jamming before I realised that my tuner had got knocked and my low B was tuned to low G# or something.... all good fun.
