MattM
The seasonal need for dosh, plus the fact I ain't playing it in preference to my fretless 'Ray, means I'm putting out the feelers for either a straight sale (£1400-ish, same as I paid), or a trade with cash my way for a fretted 'Ray, maple fingerboard preferred, and I'm a fussy bugger on colour, but try me. Original sale thread here, Max is fortunately still hosting the pics: XL2 original thread The XL2 in question is seriously good, a 29XX serial dating it to the 1985 Newburgh era, great condition, minimal fretwear, NO dings or chunks out the gel coat anywhere, flip down legrest, pivot plate intact, battery cover intact, original Steiny-logo gigbag (a bit the worse for wear but still intact) plus newer Steiny Spririt gigbag in mint condition. Almost impossible to find one in this conditon going by eBay listings over the past couple of years. Its a plain XL2, powered pickups but not an XL2A with active/centre-detented pots. I'm based in Glasgow, but work near Carlisle during the week for any F2F. Originally purchased the XL2 from SilentFly on this very forum, 275 100% feedback from a well-known auction site, and if anyone's into watches, can provide seller references from TZ-UK. Looking forward to hearing from you before I come to my senses.... Edited December 7, 2010 by MattM
Macko1968
If this is still around in a couple of weeks I fear for my wallet. Aesthetically not everyone's cuppa PG Tips but the sound is to die for.

overdriver
Values for nice things like this are through the floor at the moment, unfortunately. I'd be interested, but not at the asking. What colour 'Ray are you looking for and how much cash your way are you thinking? Thanks Mick Edited November 20, 2010 by overdriver
MattM
The nearest equivalent I can find on the open market is this one on the 'Bay : eBay 1984 XL2 which is in much worse nick than mine, and would come in at £1350 before VAT/customs. There's also this of course : Just plain daft which is crazy. A recent UK one with a dodgy neck sold for £999. I appreciate I'm not going to get the full whack I paid hence the '-ish' prepared for some wiggle room. In order of preference for the 'Ray colour it'd be natural ash, a burst (tobacco, standard, honey), black, not too keen on reds/blues/whites tbh. Cash my way would depend on age/condition of the 'Ray, whether it had case etc. Happy to negotiate depending on all these factors.
overdriver
Neither of those basses is going to achieve the asking. Mr "plain daft" ( love that) could put it up there for 10k - he wouldn't get that either!! I got one 2 months ago for 1600 USD landed, customs paid etc, came to just over a grand STG. Little bit rough round the edges and a dodgy balance pot. There's this rare white narrow 5 for just over 1100 stg, in Switzerland. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Steinberger-USA-XL2-...=item1c1744e22f The 'Ray thing is too vague for me, though i could get one handy enough. No guarantee you'd like it though!! Then I'd be stuck with it Edited November 20, 2010 by overdriver
Macko1968
If there's an issue with the asking price it should be taken to PM, as per the rules. Matt's set his price, if someone wants to pay it they will, if not, they won't.
BassBod
Price looks fine to me...just wish I either hadn't sold my Ray a few months ago, or had some spare cash! Don't s'pose a Sadowsky Metro P/J (nat ash, maple neck) would be of interest?

As someone else pointed out the market will decide. I'd rather hold out for a 'Ray as I prefer the wider neck and the overall look/sound/feel, the Sadowsky has a more jazz-style neck I understand. But thanks again for the the offer.
overdriver
People backing up a price means very little if they're not prepared to part with any money themselves- and I wasn't aware discussing price was against the rules Matt was the one who brought up the other bergers for sale around the place. PM me Matt and we'll talk money, or you can hold out for your asking, up to you. But I do have cash and I DO buy Steinbergers. Macko1968
If I had £1400 kicking about this bass would be sold. Sadly I'm a good couple of weeks at least from having that figure available to me & i don't want to part with my transition era Stingray (it's natural ash & near mint). The rules for the market place are here; http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?act=SR&f=
overdriver
I hear ya, but its exactly that isn't it? People who would have juped at things for sale aren't as flush and can't jump as easy as before. At the risk of perpetuating the whole price thing. Perspective's a funny thing too - serial 2xxx isn't low from where I'm sitting! No doubting the early ones have something extra. I have a very late one and I don't like it at all. My early one is my go-to bass always Edited November 21, 2010 by overdriver
lapolpora
I paid well over going rate for mine. Am I gutted about it - no. Because it's just an unbelievably good bass. If I lost a bit of gut though it would sit more comfortably on me As a Steinberger fan I think this bass is a bargain at the price. I wish I could justify having two. MattM
Hi guys Just taken some of my own pics to try and illustrate the condition: As you can see apart from superficial scratches and one at the top edge where the pivot strap button slides into the battery cover, there's no major chunks out of it, and its in good order. The other bit of major good news is that I somehow had it in my head it was 2934 serial, upon checking its actually 2394. This dates it to December 1984 and according to Steinbergerworld, makes it their earliest documented XL2 with a flip down legrest. Not too shabby on the old provenance and collectibility front then....
