Jonnyboy Rotten
Hi Folks, Waded through all nine pages of lovely black basses, and was surprised to not see a Stingray Stealth. Mine's pictured below, and there's none more black. Except for the ebony fretboard version, which doesn't seem to really exist except in my fevered imagination. She did have black coated strings on at one time. but my heavy picking removed the coating from one end, while my sweaty fingers removed it from the other end.
She is a beeeeaut! chriswareham
See? I didn't even know they made a bass Electromatic! Its great! (imo much more worth than even a copy of a bass beginning with 'R' but I'd do nothing to discourage their purchase.)
From what I can gather, Gretsch are still owned by the founder's family but their guitars are now manufactured under license by Fender. As well as the high end stuff, they have some affordable models, including the solid body that I own as well as a rather nice semi-acoustic. chriswareham
Definitely black! Can't you find strings with appropriate silk windings?
It's currently tuned for drop Bb, with the heaviest four strings from a five string set. I'm going to use strings designed specifically for detuning from Circle K next time it needs restringing, and I don't think they have any silk windings at all which will look better than the red silk on the current set. I quite like the blue of the silk on my black bass, but now I've thought of that I might just make them black.

Grissle
This started life as an '01 MIM fretless, all that's left is the neck, but oh what a neck!
Another option is Newtone, they'll make strings up for you to spec. I've use their Platinums for a couple of years now, they remember the gauges etc (I never can) and make a set balanced in tension - hence the odd gauges. Have no intention using any other strings since.

It does sound nice - it was this fact, coupled with the big fat chunky neck (and the lesser spotted Scottish summer) that made me think "ah, go on!" The pickup is more Gretsch-y than Ricky IMO - Fender's take on a TV Jones Thundertron, I presume.
