And another £7.90 spent on iTunes! Just bought 746 and can't stop listening to it; very drum 'n' bass as you say and right up my street musically. I may yet be converted to - or enlightened by? - jazz purely on the strength of this thread. Either that or made bankrupt, whichever comes first... I've also stumbled across Dave Holland after he was mentioned by Bilbo on another thread here. I'm sure most of you are very familiar with him, but he's new to me and another big eye-opener (ear-opener?). Some fantastic stuff from him on YouTube; I'm particularly liking this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHu6rzmUvFI
Bilbo
I went to far this month . I downloaded some massive recordings by Anthony Braxton, Old and New Dreams and Keith Jarrett. The Braxton stuff is really tough going. It is very abstract and I listened to 90 minutes (half?) of it before I had to give it a rest. I then went onto a live cd by 'Old and New Dreams', an Ornette Coleman 'tribute' band featuring Charlie Haden, Don Cherry, Dewey Redman and Ed Blackwell, whcih was also pretty free although much more accessable. I am now listenting to Keith Jarrett's 'Sunbear Concerts', a 6 cd boxed set of live improvisations that is also pretty intense. I am 4 hours in and not even half way there yet. I think I need to go lie down in a dark room! I have a Coltrane cd to get to yet that will probably sound like Kenny G after this stuff

The Sunbear Concerts are ace though, really dig them.

Incredible musicianship and immaculate groove masters! Truly amazing playing. ...I've just bought Green Delay as an impulse-buy on iTunes thanks to your link. Seems I owe you a debt of gratitude for switching me on to something new; and in monetary terms you owe me roughly 2 1/2 pints of beer ;-)
If you dig this then you really have to get hold of the album that this exact performance is on - it's simply called Alive and it was voted Jazz Album of 2010 by Mojo and Jazzwise magazines - it's a really killing record: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Alive-Phronesis/dp/B003U753O8 Another very fine band that also features Jasper H is called Kairos 4tet - led by a young sax player called Adam Waldmann - I'm a big fan and their latest album is really good too, very much in the same 'area' in terms of style, sound and playing to Phronesis - but with sax http://www.amazon.co.uk/Statement-Intent-K...0958&sr=1-

Doddy
The postman bought me 3 new albums yesterday, all loosely under the jazz banner. Bela Fleck and the Flecktones 'Rocket Science'. Typical Flecktones,so in my opinion-great. Gerald Veasley 'Velvet'. It's very 'smooth jazz' in places. It's good, but not his best. Marcus Miller 'Tutu Revisited'. A 2 CD/DVD live package of Marcus and his band doing all the tunes from Miles' 'Tutu',plus a few more. Features Christian Scott on Trumpet. Excellent. RhysP
Seriously enjoying John McLaughlin's latest album "To The One" at the moment. Etienne M'bappe's playing is awesome & his tone is fantastic. Listening to a lot of McLaughlin's stuff again at the moment; "Industrial Zen", the superb "John McLaughlin Trio live at the Royal Festival Hall" & "Belo Horizonte". Bilbo
AM listening to an interesting cd called Scenes From A Dream by Chris Minh Doky. Double bass with strings - kind of jazz/third stream - its passes perilously close to Radio 3 on occasion but I like it. His bass is beautifully recorded. He is not the most advanced or sophisticated DB player in the world but he plays some lovely lines here. Worth looking out for but I recommend you listen before you buy as it is a little 'left field'.
Skol303
Undoubtedly 'old news' to many of you here, but as a newbie to jazz I'm really liking this guy - Milt Hinton: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFTqVHEJZ0A ...he has a nice way of describing the role played by bass at the start of this clip. I'd certainly aspire to be so full of beans at that age! (though he's sadly no longer with us, as I'm sure you all know).

Jam
I'm a bit new to the Jazz thing but have recently been taking lessons with a local bass teacher who specialises in Jazz (and also double bass) and it's really opened my eyes. I can feel it improving my playing, and I understand more and more about theory too. I've been working on Autumn Leaves and Song for my Father. That song has such groove! I used to knock Jazz when I was younger (though I still don't get "Free Jazz"...) but I have a newfound respect for it, and a hunger for more now! urb
Ahem... this is a little bit good Julian Lage is incredible - he's playing here in a couple of weeks
Bilbo
I saw Lage with Gary Burton at the London Jazz Festival. I initially thought 'a young Pat Metheny' but he opened up later on and, yeah, he was cool, if a bit 'old school'.

yorks5stringer
Did our first gig as a Jazz Trio on Saturday at a very posh wedding in Northants, providing background music as the guests sipped their Canapes.....! Been a steep learning curve on the Stagg ( even though some of the tunes are not really jazz) but very enjoyable playing with a good jazz Guitarist. We did save "Isn't She Lovely" to the end as the Bride went past us into the Marquee ( we were playing in a "Tent" outside). Here's our set list, lots of songs chosen for their relevance... Tin Tin Deo Bewitched Someday My Prince will Come Here’s that Rainy Day My One and Only Love I’ve got you under my Skin Fly Me to the Moon Gentle Rain Girl from Ipanema Summertime (based on Four on Six) Love For Sale Blue Bossa Let There Be Love Days of Wine and Roses Yesterdays Autumn Leaves My Funny Valentine Blue Monk Isn’t She Lovely?
