BetaFunk
I bought this LP around 40 years ago and it still makes me sit up and listen. While Ayler's soprano is all over the place on this 1963 recording the local Copenhagen musician's play it straight which makes Ayler's playing sound even more 'way out'. Fascinating stuff. http://youtu.be/ApPE-riNdRI

Bilbo
Recommended. 'The Suitcase', a live Steve Khan 2cd featuring Anthony Jackson and Dennis Chambers. Jackson is ON FIRE!!! Check out this rare Anthony Jackson solo - it beats 99% of all other bass guitar solos for inventiveness and originality. And you never hear AJ solo!!. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4v4Zu-msnQ

Bilbo
These guys all look so young! For some reason, I though Israel Crosby was white. Maybe I was getting mixed up with Chuck Israels (this video of him with Bill Evans opens with a lovely shot of a fag toting John Le Mesurier in the front seat of the audience!!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMHsz5VqLhM
Mykesbass
My daughter has started to get into Electro Swing which has led me to digging out some of my Big Band stuff. Got a long train journey tomorrow, think I'll have at least The Atomic Mr Basie on the phone for company! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9wQYuqPH0s

I love Steve Kuhn's playing and you can't go wrong with the great JF Jenny-Clarke on bass. The second part with Gary Burton is worth watching especially for the brilliant Steve Swallow. Great stuff!!! http://youtu.be/KX-ZdONc3Oc Edited November 10, 2014 by BetaFunk

Old Man Riva
I was at Spitalfields Market yesterday and came across Shabaka Hutchings doing this.. http://www.spitalfieldsmusic.org.uk/whats-on/summer-festival-2015/shabaka-hutchings-spitalfields-re-sounded-tour/ Very pleasing on the ear and good fun to see him and a tuba player (Oren Marshall?) strolling along Liverpool St with a swarm of tourists/fans following along. Bilbo
Been a while. I just listened back to that old Colloseum slbum 'Strange New Flesh' and the track 'Down To You' with vocalist Mike Starrs who is astonishingly good. Gary Moore, Don Airey and Neil Murray leaving us wondering what may have been had Heavy Metal not come calling!!
KevB
I think a lot of folks who only picked up on GM later in his career and think of him just as a blues player don't realise he was a very accomplished fusion guitarist in his day. I picked up a cheap CD compilation years ago with a lot of Colosseum tracks on it and the playing is highly impressive.
Bilbo
Absolutely. Two tracks on his Back On The Streets lp were fusiony, and a track on Cozy Powell's Tilt lp.
KevB
Just looked it up on Amazon, maybe there aren't a lot of copies around any more, this was on the budget priced 'music club' brand and I know I wouldn't have paid more than about £6 for it,no longer the case! ; http://www.amazon.co...ts+and+walkways Unfortunately 'Down To You' isn't included but I have Strange New Flesh in my mp3 collection anyway. Looks like the CD is mainly from War Dance and Electric Savage Edited August 8, 2015 by KevB
KevB
If we're taking a bit of a jazz-rock excursion then here's one that might have passed a few people by but I quite like some of this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Td2iU1g1kqA
Bilbo
Someone else I have discovered recently who is making some incredible music is saxophonist Marius Neset. Some of his stuff is pretty intense.
Bassjon
I have just started getting into jazz and trying to find a way to mix it with punk rock! Its hard to get right but I love experimenting with it. I will post some stuff up here once Ive recorded it. But in the meantime can anyone recommend any punk jazz (if it exists??!) I've started buying jazz albums and like The Bad Plus, Steve Swallow, Miles' Kind Of Blue and Ahmad Jamal's live album But Not For Me. Where should I go next, please? : )
Bilbo
If you want 'punk' Jazz, try Bill Laswell, Last Exit, John Zorn, Ronald Shannon Jackson, Peter Brotzman, Sonny Sharrock, Jamaladeen Tacuma, Derek Bailey (The Sign Of Four), Pat Metheny (Zero Tolerance For Silence), John COltrane (Ascension).... But, be warned, this is some scary stuff!! As for where to go next, try Charles Mingus (Mingus Ah Um), John Coltrane (A Love Supreme, Giant Steps), Thelonious Monk (anything), Oliver Nelson (Blues and The Abstract Truth), Bill Evans (Live at The Village Vanguard), Ben Allison, SF Jazz Collective.... and trawl through this thread for recommendations and youtube links left by other basschatters.
