Bilbo
Yeah, it sounds like Ron (those slides at 2.38) and it certainly doesn't sound like Jack DeJohnette. I can hear something of the Gadd off Chhick Corea's Friends album but Gadd doing jazz is not something I am that familiar with - I heard him most with fusion bands.. Bilbo
That Jarrett/Haden stuff is sublime. Proper jazz without that kind of macho competitiveness that marrs a lot of the music. Coincidently, I downloaded it yesterday (I have not had a chance to listen to it properly yet).

Faithless
Well, it was the first one that popped out in Youtube, so I didn't worry about video itself, I'm more worried about music..
Gwilym
here's a few I like Art Blakey - On The Ginza (stumbled upon this once, great tune) Freddie Hubbard - Red Clay (fans of A Tribe Called Quest might recognise this), great tune. Rusty Bryant - Zoo Boogaloo, the tune that got me into the whole organ-combo bands, along with Grant Green's Sookie Sookie. Charles Earland - Marcia's Waltz - love this guy's playing and was lucky enough to see him at the Jazz Cafe. and here's his version of Red Clay (also with Mr Hubbard, and Joe Henderson) And finally, McCoy Tyner - I saw him play this live at the Blue Note in NY at a tribute gig to Elvin Jones shortly after he had passed away. Jack DeJohnette was on drums, Ravi Coltrane on sax, and they just blew my head off. cheers G

Have I wittered on about Arve Henriksen yet? http://open.spotify.com/album/7aBn46Rq8GP3zEGl6qY4dQ I saw him at the Sage Gateshead a few years back as part of the Gateshead Jazz Festival. I knew nothing about him before I entered the room, and I felt like a different person when I came out. Such intensely beautiful and haunting music, just from a guy with a trumpet and a voice (and a friend with a bunch of electronics, of course ). Bilbo
Been loading up my ipod and rediscovered a cd from Puerto Rican saxophonist David Sanchez called Obsesion. Hector
Free album by Chicago-based group "Kaleidoscope Trio". Line-up is Piano, Guitar and Bass, with a guest Tenor player on a couple of tracks. Really enjoying this album, quite a chilled out affair but with some stellar playing on all fronts. Sort of gives a "softer" feel (guitar work is reminiscent of Bill Frisell on Kenny Wheeler's stuff in the late 90s). Production on this is also really nice and clear, with a good bass tone. Enough wittering, enjoy!
Bilbo
Not my ususal list of new purchases but more personal affirmation. I did a rehearsal yesterday with the rhythm section of a Colchester based jazz quintet and it was a blast. Great sound off the double bass, more playing of the instrument that fighting with it () and ALL original material, just the way I like it. Sounds exciting if a little raw around the edges. Still learning to get the best out of the material. Some hard charts as well but worth the effort. And I have also booked a recording session for my own band. Jazz is just the best. swanbrook
Wow that map of the ocean stuff is really good! I know very little about jazz I have tried to listen to it many time before and I just can't get into it. I am not slagging off jazz I really do want to learn more about it but it just doesn't speak to me. I have played all the clips on the last page of this thread to the end ( bar the one with men in their underpants sitting in water blowing bottles and playing a flute, that I don't ever want to understand) The only one that I really dug was the map of the ocean stuff ! Can somebody tell me what type of jazz that is and is it a good place to start ? I have been playing bass for nearly 20 years and would love to be able to play like some of these cats but justdont know where to start. Again I am not trying to offend any ones taste in music I just need a point in the right direction Cheers Dave

I share with you a wish to play jazz with no desire to listen to it. Almost joking. I adore Miles and Mingus an listen to them all the time, but can't get past that. Any ideas why? Love Abdullah Ibrahim and Hugh Masakela, but that's not really jazz is it? I know jazz is a broad church etc, so there must be some way in for me. Twigman
My favourite album of all time is Kenny Burrell's Midnight Blue Title track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wAmxuHt5nw&feature=fvw Chitlins con carne: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ig5m92TwKKA...feature=related probably more blues than jazz per se but you'll still find it in the jazz section Edited October 27, 2010 by Twigman
Bilbo
Just rediscovered a CD called Unison by French double bass player Jean Francois Jenny Clark - what a player and what a tone! Some pretty demanding free jazz but his playing is so strong it is impossible not to get involved! I will be looking for more recordings with him on. Also downloaded a great cd by Chris Cheek called A Girl Named Joe - it features Marc Johnson on double bass. Some great writing on there. And a Joe Lovano CD called Sound of Joy with Anthony Cox on bass - another massive sound and a really strong player. Where are these guys and why aren't they more renowned? EssentialTension
Just been listening to Wynton Kelly Trio with Wes Montgomery Smokin' at the Half Note. Bilbo
That is a good cd but look for a Wynton Kelly cd called Blues On Purpose. It was recorded around the same time as the Smokin' lp and is really strong. PC does a 10 chorus solo (12-bar blues) that just lifts and lifts and has the audience really whippedu up and he takes it further that any other solo I have heard him play (and I have heard hundreds and hundreds)
