bremen
Am having a strange time at the moment. All I seem to want to do is practice, compose and play my own stuff, rather than keep absorbing anyone else. Maybe I have last reached a point where I am ready to 'eat my father', to quote Steve Swallow. I have a trio gig this Sunday in Bury St Edmunds with these guys....
Kevin Flanagan! He used to live down the road from me. Made my day passing his house and hearing him wail. Say hello from me - I don't know if he'd remember me but say Chris the cyclist, friend of Demmy. edit: d'oh, the post I was replying to happened months ago. How was it? Will you play together again? seashell
I enjoy a bit of jazz, but don't know much about it. When I first started going for bass lessons my teacher asked what sort of music I'd like to learn to play and I remember saying something like 'not jazz, it's too difficult'. Anyway, at my last lesson he decided he would teach me the bass line to 'So What' off of 'Kind of Blue'. Not on double bass I hasten to add! He just thought it would be a good exercise for me to learn it. He said it would help my playing in all sorts of ways, including getting to sound mroe flowing and less jerky (he put it better than that though). So that's what I'm practising every night at home now. Absolutely loving it. Loving it so much that it makes me smile to myself while I'm playing it (or rather attempting to play it). So many different moods in it. And the key changes are so beautiful and clever. Must go out and get the whole album now.
Bilbo
I have bought 5 copies of Kind of Blue over the years; LP, Cassette, CD, CD with dvd and now a download (cheap as chips). INteresting thought; has it really sold 3 million copies or have 600,000 people bought it 5x like me
thisnameistaken
I've bought KoB once, and someone else has bought it for me once, so I'm on twice-bought. I've probably listened to it twice too.

But I'll probably order a CD off Amazon to be going on with. I'm finding that one of the great things about having lessons is that it all adds to your musical education in general. It's not just about learning how to play, it's also about having your musical horizons widened. Lovin' it.
Bilbo
Download cost me about £2 (can't remember where but itunes/amazon/emusic are the only possibilities). Its the music that matters, not the format!

It'll sound great in the car

Suddenly mp3 became quite interesting.
bassace
I bought it as an LP when it first came out and later lost it. Ten years ago I got a CD free by cashing in some Shell coupons. As I understand it, the LP is a bit different from the CD, but who cares? It's still a great session.

Must have really p***ed off the pianists who were trying to copy Bill Evans'/Wynton Kelly's stuff.
OliverBlackman
hi jazzers. Can anyone recommend me some really stand out scott Lafaro recordings. Particularly with either Bill Evans or Chet Baker.

Bilbo
Just had a pleasant surprise. In an effort to plug some aesthetic/historical gaps in my listening, I down loaded Carla Bely's legendary 'Escalator Over The Hill'. I was kind of expecting to be confronted with a bizarre mixture of free jazz and Kurt Weill (and I guess I did a bit) but its really good stuff; eclectic but interesting. And I had forgotten how good Jack Bruce's voice is.
urb
Gregory Porter.... Gregory Porter.... Gregory Porter.... Gregory Porter.... Gregory Porter.... Gregory Porter.... Go and buy 'Water' now - a simply stunning jazz vocal album with a ton of soul and gospel stuff in there too - his new one is called Be Good and is dare I say even better - out early next year - and is just beautiful... the man is a real diamond singer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1SUyeIqWWM

If you haven't already heard it, you should check out the Hapless Child album, in which Robert Wyatt sings some of the stories of Edward Gorey. Fab band, including Bley and some of her regular companions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XDS8W3eu-I&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtRqUEtMsDg&feature=related

Bilbo
Just downloaded this. A trumpet player called Avishai Cohen (NOT the same guy as the bass player). I heard this guy with the SFJazz Collective so got hold of this trumpet/bass/drums trio recording to see what he is doing. Really pleasant surprise. Intense and intelligent stuff. Bilbo
Blimey - that Gorey/Wyatt stuff is a bit grim (or should that be Grimm?). Marvellous stuff - the best side of prog rock, when it had that wonderful English quality that it seemed to lose after the break-up of the Canterbury Scene etc
Skol303
Just a quick aside... but has anyone here been watching Treme? (the HBO TV show, from the writer of The Wire): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treme_%28TV_series%29 I'm only a couple of episodes in myself, but so far it's been brilliant. Great writing, acting and some superb music. I'm no big aficionado of New Orleans jazz, but this show may well get me into the swing of it...
