I thought it was great. Here's a link to a discussion about it on BC.

oops. great to see people talking about it. I've been working on it since last summer and only just getting back online so nice to see people enjoyed it!

Did some random downloading last week and found a great album called Oye by Miguel Zenon and the Rhythm Collective. It features a lovely bass player (electric) called Aldemar Valentin . Worth checking out.

Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra.
Just seen this doing the rounds (I have not heard this for ages)
The playing goes without saying, but the arrangements are just fantastic.

I have had some exciting new finds recently including a Joachim Kuhn CD with Daniel Humair and J.F. Jenny-Clark - the tune Heavy Birthday is absolutely stunning; piano trio at it's best. If you like the energy from Hiromi's trio or Michel Camilo, this is like this but with three astonishingly creative musicians taking it to another level.

Also a lovely Paul Bley solo cd, 'Play Blue', Mirsolav Vitous' newly re-released cd with Jon Surman and Kenny Kirkland and Arild Andersen's trio with Tommy Smith. Have been revisiting Charlie Haden a lot since his passing and rediscovering the majesty of his playing; his discography is astonishing. Much music to enjoy.

To keep a four decade Monday night residency at the Village Vanguard you've got to be a good band and that were more than that. Great orchestra.

This is great. Just great.

This quintet is just what Miles Davis needed at that time. Herbie Hancock was 24, Tony Williams 18 and with Wayne Shorter trying to shake off the Coltrane disciple tag and it's all anchored by the great Ron Carter. Wow, what a Quintet!!!!!!! Oh, and Miles isn't bad either. :)

Lovely but I am tempted by the question 'how tall is Ron Carter?'.

Very tall. :)

Let's have more of Ron............

You can find him on roncarter.net and you will find some exquisite sound clips. I like his 'statement' :-

I think that the bassist is the quarterback
in any group, and he must find a sound that he is willing to be responsible for.

PS He's 6'-4"

I haven't read back through the whole thread (I could be here for some time) so apologies if posted before but I had to throw in some Dave Holland Quintet. Fantastic musicians and so tight. Love the DB solo intro on this one, the amazing inter-play between Billy Kilson on drums and Robin Eubanks on the T'bone and awesome soloing as ever from Chris Potter (tho I do prefer him on tenor). Mentioned everyone else so must mention Steve Nelson's vibes - not everyones cup of tea but adds a different dimension. Great stuff.

Hope the link works!!

One the greats. I've seen Dave Holland a few times and was fortunate to see this line-up live.

Yep indeed. I've only seen DH once but that was also with the quintet a few years back down in Bath. That would have been with Nate Smith on drums then tho but still really fantastic live.

I made the point in my original draft of Mr. PC the life and music of Paul Chambers that Miles replaced PC with one of the only bass players TALLER than Chambers (6'3"). Alyn Shipton edited it out :)

Interesting version when compared to the more well known Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers version with Morgan alongside Benny Golson on Tenor Sax and the composer Bobby Timmons on Piano. Interesting also to compare the bass playing of the great Ray Brown with the brilliant Jymie Merritt.
