yorks5stringer
I've not read the whole thread (so it may have been covered already) but am enjoying Gregory Porter's Liquid Spirit at the moment. I know it's a bit 'Radio 2' and is not the 'latest album' but some nice playing and arrangements.
Bilbo
That Lincoln Center Cuban album is great. There is a brilliant cd by David Murray in this vein. Also worth checking out Miguel Zenon's Identities are changeable project.
Jazzjames
I was just listening to a Steve Swallow track called 'Re-Inventing The Wheel' (recorded live at Ronnie Scotts for the cd 'Always Pack Your Uniform On top') and I was overwhelmed by a wave of visceral excitement at the beauty of it. It features an opening cadenza by guitarist Mick Goodrick, a beautifully understated guitarist (now THERE'S two words you'd never expect to see in the same sentence!) and builds with some beautiful playing by Chris Potter (sax) and Barrie Ries (tpt). Adam Nussbaum on drums... gorgeous. It reminded my of all of the reasons I love music and jazz in particular. Emotionally profoundly satisfying. I listen to jazz a LOT and just LOVE it. There are some beautiful players out there weaving some real magic without a shred of testosterone. Art for Art's sake. Love it. This stuff deserve passionate advocacy and so I am here to tell you all.. Put the barre chords down and LISTEN!!!
Have you heard Swallow's album Damaged in Transit? Trio album with Chris Potter and Adam Nussbaum. It's one of my absolute favourite records.
Bilbo
I have, JJ. I absolutely love it. There are other great trios Swallow did wit Lee Konitz, David Liebman and, my favourite, Ohad Talmor. Swallow is my man.
yorks5stringer
Speaking of Steve Swallow, have had some fun at a local jam with Chicken Dog: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RjAPKk2jTA

Coilte
Not sure if they have been mentioned already in the thread, but I have been a long time fan of the Belgian band "Aka Moon". It is hard to categorise their music. This is one of the reasons why I like them. They draw inspiration from a lot of sources, and then put their own unique interpretation on it. I recently bought their CD "The Scarlatti Book" and was blown away by the album. It is their interpretation of some of Sclarlatti's sonatas. They have quite a large output of albums, each uniquely different from one another. Here is a live version of a track from "The Scarlatti Book".... jazz meets classical !!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPAo9M_lBTI

I need to dig out that Talmor one with the green cover, I haven't listened to that one much yet. I met Adam Nussbaum once. A very nice guy, and had lots to say about Swallow. A prolific musician for sure.
Bilbo
Listen to the whole video; Marion Montgomery is not mentioned very often but has a great touch but Dudley is a monster in every sense. Absolute magic. Who said Jazz can't be entertaining? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CS8Va_z-2bA
bassace
Great, Bilbo. I remember when he did a lot of live TV. And before that he was pianist in the Johnny Dankworth Band. By far the standout jazz big band of its time.
lowdown
A real melodic concert. Vocals and harmony are really on top of it. (good band as well).
