ProfJames Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017
Country music is also a very broad church. How do you feel about that stuff? Elevator music/Kenny G has NOTHING to do with jazz and never has. Come to think of it, on listening to your example about I got the distinct impression that this was some decent players with a sax player who felt like he had to put in irrelevant atonal squawks from time to time in order to be taken as a serious jazzer. Mor smoke and mirrors but at least there is SOME musicianship in there.
Kenny G is probably one of the highest grossing earners as an instrumentalist. But if you like the sax try out Colin Stetson, incredible...................https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ra-EsJpkG9o Quote

I thought it was great to start with, he is a very impressive player. But, it all got very Ambient/Soundscaping and droned on a bit (but then again that's his thing these days). He did a couple things on Contra Bass Clarinet which I liked. Certainly an Interesting player. Quote
Leonard Smalls Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 And more excellent sax, again with Jamaaladeen Tacuma on bass, Calvin Weston on drums and Marc Ribot on crazed guitar: Quote

lowdown Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 Bob Berg, one of my favourite Tenor players. His Soprano playing was pretty special as well. Love this album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMFn6VLW66g An a straight ahead gig. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMFn6VLW66g Quote

bassace Posted April 29, 2017 Posted April 29, 2017 (edited) Just listened to Radio 2, Janice Long live from the Cheltenham 'Jazz' Festival playing three hours of pop-sounding-like-jazz. Nice. Edited April 29, 2017 by bassace Quote
Bilbo Posted April 29, 2017 Author Posted April 29, 2017 It gives me the arse, this 'let's ride on the back of the kudos of a Jazz festival without actually playing any Jazz. It's bad enough when VAn Morrison and Jools Holland get headline slots but Wilco Johnson? Ridiculous. Quote
MoonBassAlpha Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 Agreed about Wilko. On the other hand, Chick Corea with Eddie Gomez was bloody marvellous. I was quite transported. Quote

Jazz is getting "exposure" to people who are not familiar with it. After seeing their non jazz artist(s) perform, some people might hang around out of curiosity to hear some jazz being performed. Who knows...they might even like what they hear and seek out other jazz artists. Jazzers are always complaining that it does not have the following it deserves. Would this not be a good way of gaining potential fans ? Sometimes I think that jazz fans actually LIKE the idea of it being a minority interest, as it adds weight to the elitist concept. The above ...from a jazz enthusiast of over forty years. Edited May 1, 2017 by Coilte Quote
timhiggins Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 I have found that often the most innovative of players are not constrained by a need to stay within the so called jazz idiom and also that a lot of the best new talent is overlooked in favour of a name that will sell tickets. Diggs for me is one of the best but where can i see him ? http://youtu.be/7w6MjJ7Cz8U Quote
lowdown Posted May 28, 2017 Posted May 28, 2017 Claus Ogerman and Michael Brecker. (Cityscape Album). Fantastic album. http://youtu.be/NHgAh_WlhiE Quote

Bilbo Posted January 3, 2018 Author Posted January 3, 2018 Just downloaded a live album by the Michel Camilo Big Band called Caribe. Anthony Jackson plays an absolute killer gig. Great Latin grooves and unison lines absolutely nailed. Quote

mikel Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 (edited) We like what we like. I love all sorts of music and tend to go for songs that move me somehow rather than genres. "If the music doesn't make you want to either dance, cry, fight or fu*k, then don't listen to it". Someone much cleverer than me said that. I see it has, no surprise, descended into "Serious" Jazz, and the rest. "That's not proper jazz", etc etc. I have a good American friend who has been drumming in Jazz music for 40+ years. His view is that Jazz is anything you want it to be, and that's why it has evolved and morphed and never stood still. Edited April 14, 2018 by mikel Additions. Quote
Mykesbass Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 Not his Jazziest tune (whatever that might be) but I'm "digging" Kamasi Washington and looking forward to the new album in June. Here's the very short Youtube pre-release taster: Quote
ezbass Posted July 3, 2018 Posted July 3, 2018 A rather good version of my favourite Chick Corea composition. Quote
