iconic
well, it's the closest description I can think of...maybe a nasal cat...if I wake my Siamese up he makes this noise ....finally I have found a vid of the song and it seems the guy has a Rick'...not knowing anything about them and never seeing one singing funk before....is this sound normal, or maybe it's fretless or perhaps it has some aftermarket pick-ups, whatever I love the tone

Looking at the age of the track (well, the clothes anyway!) there wouldn't have been any super clever effects around at the time like there are today but there's definately "something else" in there with the Ric. A subtly set autowah of some description would be my best guess.
Chris2112
That does have a really nice burpy sound to it. Possibly a subtle envelope filter maybe? Answers on a postcard!

Ou7shined
I see a Ric but I can't hear one.
I suspect the selection of guitar was more to do with colour co-ordination than musical accuracy... Without wanting to sound like a wine taster, it does have that punchy growl though - along with a lot of mid and dollop of "something else"... gjones
It's an electric guitar with a filter or possibly a wah wah pedal. Of course it could be a stylophone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkTQsOQLEeU...feature=related which does sound very like a siamese cat. BigRedX
As always in these cases just because the bassist is seen miming with a RIC in the video doesn't mean that is what was used on the record...
matski
Sounds like a StingRay to me...

Brave Sir Robin
Yeah I vote Stingray, but it's a Ric in the video. Either we all need some earwax treatment, or the video is FAKE!
