RICKENBACKER PORN

Recommended Posts

I’ve just bought back my June 1976 4001.

I bought it in 1989 for £325 from DGC in Durham. I stupidly sold it in the summer of 2017 and regretted it ever since. Thankfully the guy I sold it to offered me first refusal when he was considering shifting it again. Needless to say I didn’t think twice. It’s now back where it belongs with my 1985 4003s

Received this '78 yesterday. I've owned a 2006 4003 once, but this one plays way better with it's thinner neck. Sounds great too with enough meat on the bridge pickup, so probably the feared .47 cap has been removed earlier.

The bass has a cream colored truss rod cover. It looks original to me, but haven't seen this before.

Mmm, very nice! What are those odd little bolts between the pickup and the bridge for?

Nothing. My guess is that the pickup cover had been mounted there. I'm planning to fill them up and make them visually dissappear (as far as possible).

Reason i ask is I have something similar on my '82 4001, two bolts either side of the bridge where presumably the previous owner decided to put a Fender-style bridge cover over it (???!)

Sounds like a coincidence(?) .. If it's something that rickenbacker did, it's unknown to me. But maybe someone recognizes this and has an explanation.

The bolts are parallel to the pickup bolts, so I assume that the pickup cover had been mounted there. Just a theory though :)

Montezuma Brown.

i guess it has the elongated heel at the headstock end too.

I've got a push-pull pot on mine so I can bypass the .0047 series cap, like they do on the 4003.

I've no idea what those screws are for - it certainly wasn't the stock Ric pickup surround and it doesn't look like where they'd be for a 50s style pickguard.

I think it has the elongated heel indeed. Don't have the bass in my hands right new, but there is a thickened area from the headstock towards the fretboard.

The colour should be autumnglo :)

Ah yes - Autumnglo!

Let us know how you get on with it!

I've only played it at home but it's so far absolutely wonderful. Got the Rickenbacker sound but it can also do 'normal' bass sounds too. I normally only play lightweight basses (I've got two Maruszczyk Jakes - both around the 7lbs/3.15kg weight - one if for sale at the moment to pay for this if anyone is interested) so would normally avoid anything even remotely heavier (this is 9lbs/4kg) but it feels as light as the Jakes (this is the walnut version. I understand the standard ones are a little heavier).

When I first saw pictures of this I was disappointed that both the iconic bridge shape had gone as well as the chrome pickup surrounds etc (and the triangular shaped new pickups), but in the flesh it's still a Rickenbacker (but very well made :)

Yes, I have to say that I think they look a bit "sterile" with a generic bridge.

But some folks will be calling hallelujah!

It is sterile looking (which isn't the idea of a Rick bass in my opinion) but it's such a good bass I can live with it :) and now it's got black instead of white plastic parts it looks (in my opinion) a whole lot better.

I've never played one (a Ric 5-string), or even seen one; I'm sure it'll happen some time.

I do quite like added flexibility of a 5-string though, so it may just be a matter of time.
