OldGit
Stop Press: Sept 30th 09 this is now for sale (Edit on the edit... Wayne Punk Dud isnow the proud owner - ) http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?s=&sho...st&p=294769 Got this in from a nice man in Colorado. It's a used but virtually unmarked SX P with a new SX Jazz neck inna 75 Jazz Stylee. It's been treated to Fender tuners, bridge, strings and pick up cover (off with that already.. ) and a big fat over-wound pickup by GFS and a GFS scratch plate. You know I said tortoiseshell was The One True Path for sunburst P's well I think this may be the exception. I think the black plate sets off the neck markers just right. Neck's a bit thin for a P but I've been playing jazzes recently so I can get used to that. It will be getting the 800 grit rubdown treatment very soon to take the gloss off. I've not had the plate off to see if its sheilded so I'll do that if needed and swap teh tone capacitor for an orange drop cap as I happen to have one handy. It sounds great through my bargain basement Peavey Combo 300. So that's the "Jam Session Rig" sorted. neilb
Si, Nice mate, very nice. I think Kurt at Rondo must be in to us for some commission by now, either that or set up a SX-UK emporium.

A few tweaks to do for my personal preferences and it will be very nice I think .. I emailed the UK SX dealer but he isn't interested in bringing in the good ones. he does teh bass packs with the 21 fret jazzes ... The Irish shop has some of the good ones but the prices (in delivery and tax) are the same as Rondo and with less ease of ordering or range... paul h
Vey nice indeed. I had nearly decided on a black plate for mine, which is currently sitting in the SX depot. Instead I reckon I will go for the tort. That way when I order a black P as well, I can get a black plate for that one and mix and match them. I haven't even got it yet and I'm planning my next one! p.

You buggers have persuaded me that a tort will look better than a white one. The neck pocket needs quite a bit of "deepening" as the pups on the SX seem to be a tad nearer the neck than a Fender. paul h
I ordered mine from http://www.axesrus.com/axeplates.htm It's not here yet, so I can't really reccomend it. I went for the US/Mex configuration as opposed to the "P copy" format. The reason being that I very scientifically superimposed a photo of US 57 Fender over my SX and the plates looked close enough. I am not sure what AxesRus us means by "thicker horn" on the "copy" description. Of course if I ordered the wrong one I won't be the least bit surprised. OldGit
I took the P to my regular Jam session tonight .. Boy oh boy Its got such a fat sound .. Very much an overwound pickup. I may have to screw it back down a bit I'll also have to mess with the amp eq a bit to add some cut. Bit hard to know what to do with 30 seconds of set up time in a jam session situation, and with an old TE head hummmm loads of knobs and sliders ..... Still it sits nice and hangs fine. The tuners are a tad heavier than the SX ones but it seems OK .. It's light anyway. So, plays well and certainly looks good ..
paul h
Glad it's working out for you. Wouldn't it have been funny if we all got one at the same time but they turned out to be rubbish! Tweaked my truss rod today. It was playing fine, I just wanted to see what I could get out of it. It is now possibly the best playing of all my basses. Getting close to the MTD Kingston I had, which was the best player I've owned. Granted my experience of high end basses is extremely limited but not sure how much better it can get. I have the action pretty low, with a few buzzes here and there, but nothing that's picked up. The neck is closer to a Jazz than a P. It's about the same weight if not lighter than my basswood bodied Aerodyne. Of course the neck has been overdoing the fake tan, but it all plays so well I don't really want to change it. OldGit
A short update I've not posted any pictures yet as the bass is in a state of flux It's currently in its underwear awaiting the routing for the installation of a battery box for the Artec SE2A preamp. This is the three pot version with volume plus stacked treble and bass controls. I have a chrome stack knob set that goes with the P bass chrome vol knob but I may splash out £3.50 for a black lower ring like the 1960 stacked Jazz controls ... I also gave in to The Call of True Way and bought an AXL tortie plate (an eBay bargain at £5) The very loud "death metal" pickup came out and my original real 1962 P pickup has gone in. Damn fine that sounds too despite its age. The Fender "5 screws with threaded saddles" bridge came off in favour of the Gotoh 203 which is more like a new Fender US series bridge - ie like a bent tin one but with a lot more meat. Should have it all together next week (after a soldering lesson from Rich)... I may also replace the nut with bone or brass one if Dave Dearnley isn't too busy when he does the battery box rout ... OldGit
All sorted .. It works Rich advised a gas soldering iron (on sale at half price from maplins) that's made all the difference. Just have to wait 'til the next Jellies gig to try it out loud .. The bridge seems to have made a significant different to how solid it feels though, especially on the low strings. Now I need some shorter bridge grub screws to avoid lacerations

Low End
Old Git my fellow SX lover, I have seen you make a reference to using 800 grit rubdown treatment, resisting the oppurtunity to make lewd comment about the whole rubdown business, can you tell me what's involved here. I'm am the very proud owner of a SX SJB LTD2 which is truly special but the gloss on the neck can get a bit lacklustre and thus sticky, cheers for that and keep pluggin' those special ones. I'll look after the Irish branch of the European SX Appreciation Society!

The process is this: 1 Place the bass on its face on your work bench 2 Brew a top notch coffee. I like Rossa beans ground fine for an espresso machine. Two shots through a Briel Duo coffee maker, each shot should just fill a small espresso cup. Pour that into a warmed mug with a widish mouth. I like the Portmeirion Flower series. The clay is just the right thickness and it has a pleasing, chunky, feel to it. Tall narrow mugs are Ok too but that affects the crema... Using semi skimmed fresh and cold milk, in a Turkish coffee maker jug, bring up to about 125 degrees with teh milk heater wand and tap the jug on the work surface a few times to settle it before pouring. The amount of air/steam you blend in is down to taste but I like a thick "Starbucks" top on my coffee rather than a traditional South Wales Italian Cafe thin and milky latte ... Bring that to your work area and drink a few mouthfuls whilst you mentally prepare yourself for steps 3 and 4. 3 Remind yourself that this is an SX bass and not a Shuker, Musicman, or pre-cbs Fender. It cost £20 to make and has little or no mojo of it's own. It really deosnt matter a whole lot if you totally mash it up cos a new one is less than a Squier..... Now, say a few Om's and focus 4 Take the 800 grit paper and rub it gently up and down the back of the neck 'til the surface is dull 5 Wipe with slightly damp cloth to remove the dust. 6 Play the bass 7 play a hot 'n' sweaty gig or two and review the situation. You may need to do it again at that point.
