lanark
I have a hercules folding stand that workde fine for my Precision, but now I play a Jazz, the asymetrical bottom means that it's very unstable. Can anyone recommend me a stand (preferably £25 or under) that will hold the Jazz securely but fold into a gig bag, maybe with a neck supprt. gary mac
When I started gigging a jazz i got the Hercules stand that allows the bass to be hung from the head stock, sure it was about £25. It's been perfect.
Paul S
I have one of these - Ultimate Guitar Stand GS-100 as here - seems to do the job and folds away into my holdall afterwards:

Jerry_B
I haven't had problems with the Hercules and my Jazz. The trick seems to be with the rotating arms that you rest the bass on. I keep one straight and the other out to an angle of 45 degrees or so. Seems to work okay.
Delberthot
I just use a regular stand with my Thunderbird and its still totally secure - its one of these: http://www.thomann.de/gb/millenium_gitarre...f47fd2a2a5ab5e8 I must've had mine about 5 years and its still as good as the day I bought it. Not bad for less than a fiver
lanark
Thanks for the replies guys - I've ordered one of the Hercules autograbbing ones with folding legs that hang the bass. Should solve my problems. Of course it never falls off teh mini-stand at home, just at rehearsals and gigs - I guess it's the heavy buggers jumping up and down around it.l
ras52
I've been using a couple of Schubb Talons, which are great at home but not as secure as the Hercules I've been using for my classical g**t*r: http://www.herculesstands.co.uk/product/85...ic_guitar_stand There's also a version of this for solidbodies which I fancy: http://www.herculesstands.co.uk/product/85...ic_guitar_stand Although I can't see anything on the Hercules site about it, Thomann say "not recommended for guitars with nitro lacquer finish". Are Thomann just covering themselves, or it this a real issue. I have a '78-ish Precision and a Yamaha BB350F, and I think the Precision might be nitro (although already has staining on the back from being left alone in a Fender hard case for too long). I don't have direct experience, but google will find you a few horror stories about nitro finishes and foam padding on guitar stands. What I do have direct experience of is the effect foam padding can have on an oil finish: the two marks in the centre of this photo are from the back of a stand very similar to the Hercules one. And there are matching marks on the bottom of the bass where it was resting on the arms of the stand. Since then I've taken to wrapping cloth around the stand to slow down the damage. Cat Burrito
I gigged my Jazz for the first time in 10yrs last night and I used my hercules folding stand. No problems, I just offset the body slightly to the right and it stood (or is it sat?) on the stand quite comfortably before and after the show. Mine is the small folding one that doesn't support the neck in any way.
Doddy
I don't like the Hercules stands. I found the grabby bits broke easily and they were easily knocked over. I use the Ultimates at all my gigs-both the Genesis 200 and 100 models.
TheRockinRoadie
My band use a pair of those flight case style stands, where the case opens up and you assemble the stand. Leather straps with buttons stop the instruments from falling out. I like them because they look great and are easy to use. We airbrushed the band logo on the front, so they look good when facing the audience too! I've had lots of experience with the hercules grab stands aswell, and I have never had a problem. This includes usage with J's, P's, Warwicks etc and all were fine. I also have one of the wall mount hercules hangers, its also good quality, and I feel slightly reassured that whatever i hang on it wont fall out!
