mcnach
here's the youtube link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vR1-PyXHfI It's a very meaty, mild overdrive, but very "lumpy" (how do you describe a sound??? ) I can get something reasonable with a Danelectro Transparent Overdrive, but not quite. An Ibanez PD7 does the meaty/thick very well... but the lumps are smaller The Digitech Bass Driver is too gritty, and so is the MXR M80 Bass DI+. Does anybody have experience using some other overdrive to get a similar sound to that in "Wide awake"?
phil.i.stein
dunno , just sounds like an active bass recorded with a bit of amp gain to me (& eq on the mids) ? but for mild od on a pedal, i like the Hartke VXL with my MM Sterling. it has a sweepable pre-shape that just works nice with my set-up. pantherairsoft
Its more tube-warth than overdrive. A tube head with the drive channel up a little bit for flavour plus a slight low-mid boost would do it… I doubt Timmy uses an Overdrive pedal on it at all to be honest. Overdrive pedal with the OD only slightly there and roll more mids into your sound should get you close… don't play the strings with too much attack… keep it soft on the fingering style. Mr. Foxen
Bunch of fiddling with a VT bass should head the right way.
krispn
I've an EBS valve drive that'll get you there. It's all valve dirt, classic tone stack and in combination with your amp (a TC by the looks of your sig - a little tweaking to the mid range controls) and you'll get a pretty frickin' good OD sound with plenty of oomph! Just a thought Edited December 8, 2010 by krispn

It does seem to produce all kinds of good sounds. One day I'll buy one to try.

It just has... god, how to describe this? here I go: "finer lumps" The growl is not as fat. It's nice and it's a type of sound I use frequently. But I'm after a fatter lumpier buy soft growl, *if* I can get it easily. The bass sound on that whole album is delicious.
