RickIronWitch Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 Ok, I've just picked up an early FMC Sunn Mustang P-Bass on the Bay, mainly for the Sunn logo if I'm gonna be honest. I'm going to replace the pups and the wiring, but I've never customised a bass before. What pups are available and what would people recommend for me? I might set up a build topic on it when I get started depending on howmuch I decide to do on it. Quote
neepheid Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 That depends - what kind of sound are you wanting? Quote
RickIronWitch Posted December 9, 2010 Author Posted December 9, 2010 Growling, punchy lows, good range of mids, not arsed about the highs Quote
Noisyjon Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 I would suggest a Wizard Thumper pickup with CTS 250k pots, a Sprague Orange Drop .047 cap, Switchcraft jack socket & cloth wire. The pickup can be bought direct from Wizard and the electronics from WD Music. I've done a similar project and can't recommend this stuff highly enough. Cheers, Jon Quote
RickIronWitch Posted December 9, 2010 Author Posted December 9, 2010 Cheers mate, I'll look into them. Quote

Cheers, Jon
Exactly what i have in my Squier CV P bass now so another vote for all the above. Jon. Just make sure you get the right knobs for the right pots. Split shaft knobs wont fit on solid shaft pots etc. The normal way to wire a P bass is to use 2 CTS 250k audio taper pots like these CTS pots But some people find using linear pots for the volume give a more gradual increase/decrease over the full rotation. RickIronWitch Posted December 9, 2010 Author Posted December 9, 2010 Ok cool. I'm pretty much set by the looks of things, the only thing I can't find is cloth wire. Quote
Noisyjon Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 It's on the WD Website see: HERE Quote
