EntropicLqd
Greetings oh people full of wisdom, and encyclopedic knowledge of songs. In 6 weeks time one of the bands I'm in will be playing at a 25th wedding anniversary. There's no real issue with the set we've got at the moment as it's pretty broad, and should be fine for the people that will be there. However, it would be nice to play some "older" stuff for the celebratees (is that even a word?). Can people provide some suggestions for some upbeat, simple (the easier the better) songs that would sound OK in a 5-piece (vocals, 2 guitars, drums, bass) that would be about the right sort of era. I'm guessing late 70s/early 80s. Our singer was suggesting some up-beat walking bass stuff ... I guess he's hoping people will boogey on down to whatver it is we are going to play. Anyways, enough pre-amble ... any suggestions?

EntropicLqd
Thanks for the suggestions so far. Keep 'em coming.
Pretenders, Blondie etc? (do you have a female singer?)
Sadly we have to put up with a bloke on vocals. I've got some Pretenders stuff somewhere (I think) I'll have to have a rummage and see what I can dig up. I wouldn't mind hearing him try and sing "Walking on Sunshine" though. Although whether I'd be able to get through the song without collapsing in fits of laughter is anyones guess.

Hit&Run
wmsheep: "Robbie Robertson - Somewhere down the Lazy River". Isn't that "Somewhere Down the Crazy River"? Bassline by Guy Pratt (I believe), and it ain't bad. Sorry; I'm anally retentive! What about Echo Beach (by Martha & the Muffins)? I'm sure you could pull that off with a bloke singing, and everyone knows the song. The sax solo may translate well to guitar as well. Dire Straits, Michael Jackson etc... P-T-P
Maybe not all be from the right time frame but for party type gigs we include some or all of these and have one (and a half sometimes it seems) less guitarists than you... Can't Get Enough of Your Love - Bad Company All Right Now - Free Crazy Little Thing Called Love - Queen Dance the Night Away - Mavericks (yawn to play but gets 'em on the floor) Long Train Running - Doobie Brothers Play the Funky Music - Wild Cherry Is This the Way (To Amarillo)? - Tony Christie Keep on Running - Spencer Davis Group Achy Breaky Heart - Billy Rae Cyrus (if you can keep a straight face) Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrisson Caroline - Status Quo (never fails, even with me singing it!) 70s/80s numbers that are easy enough which we also do... Is She Really Going Out With Him? - Joe Jackson (if the groom has a sense of humour) Every Breath You Take - The Police (play it more up tempo like on the live album) So Lonely - The Police I'm Gonna Be (500 miles) - Proclaimers Bad Case of Loving You - Robert Palmer Make Me Smile (Come Up & See Me) - Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel
