JTUK
All image, IMV.. ok voice, if you can even say that, and decent enough grooves but not a vocalalist you'd listen to, really. just my 2p.

Not so much her vocal range for me - but some suspect tuning. Great visuals though. Garry Edited December 11, 2010 by lowdown
Martin E
I agree she's made some great well produced songs. I've always got the impression though that she's a singer with a very very limited vocal range. In fact not even a range as such - just a few notes where she can hit that certain distinctive sweetspot.
Clarky
Smooth Operator must have been one of a very few times that "the charts" had a bass solo in a top 10 hit. I quite like that song (and sung along to it like a saddo whilst driving home from work with some retro radio station on in the last tube strike!) but I'm afraid I generally find her vocals devoid of warmth. I bought her album back in the early 80s but moved it on swiftly. Sorry B5 .. although I did play a lot of LOTW, Warriors and Incognito around the same time if it makes you feel better

As for Sade, very limited vocal range but some very good tunes I thought.

As an analogy, Rembrandt had a limited pallette of colours to work from and he did just fine with it - giving him pots of dayglow pink and yellow would just be stupid. Sade mixed Soul and R&B together, and added a few other musical genres, to make a sound that I personally find quite pleasing. I have never been a fan of Soul or R&B and therefore have absolutely none in my music collection - that's a personal taste thing and absolutely nothing to do with ethnicity. I do have some Sade. It makes me want to learn it
Mykesbass
I thought she was great at the time and still love her music. Yes, she did have a limited vocal range/style but I don't personally feel that detracts from the fact that teh band made some great music. Would love to find a copy of the Smooth Operator 12" breakdown mix.

Mickeyboro
Not my cup o' tea but she and her band were/are good at what they do and there's musicianship involved. Which will do for me. If you aren't interested, scroll on...

steve-soar
What's all this nonsense about vocal range? If that were the case, then Celine Dion, or Mariah Scurvy would be the de facto standard of most aspirational female singers. Oh f***. BTW, I own Diamond Life and play it occassionaly. Hobbayne
I remember reading somewhere when Sade first appeared that she was related to Michael Caine somewhere along. I think it was 1983 but I could be wrong. There was a big surge in bassists playing Stingrays back then, Pino's fretless on Whereever I Lay My hat, this fella on Smooth Operator and Mikey Craig from culture club all played one. Me? I had a Westone Thunder

fatback
Not bothered about vocal range meself. Her music has groove, it's sexy, the production is top class. Oh, and the bass is cool too. What's not to like? Maybe opinions depend on whether or not you ever had a great smooch to a Sade tune btw I don't think anyone should be called a clown on a forum like this. Beno
Hey. Just putting my bit in here. One of my favorite basslines in Sade's songs would be Cherry Pie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Py3qW5HAg8U There are live versions on UT but b/line is best in orig. NB. Scroll down a bit and check out the dude playing it on his todd.
