stingrayPete1977
Well it looks like Im off to try out some 5 stringers on saturday as I have to keep lending one or tuning to B. Lets not go down the why should I get one route and focus on the options instead. Bassdirect is looking like the first place on the cards saturday morning to try a G&L L2500 Tribute http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...500BluebMP.html Or a Mayones Jabba classic http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...bba_5_Sunb.html or http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...ba_5_Black.html Price range is £500-£1300ish I suppose and the wife will moan whatever I come back with so I may as well go in for a penny but without spending for the sake of it in case I decide to move it on. Its going to be a brand new one so lets no go into the secondhand is better for bargains, I know but Im feeling naughty and Santa says it OK* *(Bank account has not had a bashing since the pre EB in May!) Any other thoughts in that style/price range? I know its horses for courses but someone might just suggest something I hadnt thought of. Xotic 5 is so nice up close http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...5_Y_Blonde.html (Ask the people that tried it at BassdayUK) but Santa says its a bit hefty for his sack So come on then no fighting lets have 'em....... Ou7shined
Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass V Active + buy the Mrs something special with the change = very under-rated brand new fiver + a guaranteed xmas blowie.
jonunders
i have a g&l l2500, brilliant bass
paul_5
5 swear by my Blade B15 - £600 and every Jazz Bass tone you'll ever need, also lovely playable neck. Useful 'mid boost' switch for recording DI'd - works every time.
martthebass
Y'know what I'm gonna say Pete.......Ray5. I've had a few 5s, the Ray has the nicest neck IMHO. The G&L is close but no cigar. Thought you'd had a Ray5?

Gust0o
The G&L looks stunning. Have you considered an MTD Kingston Heir, or similiar? I have one, and rate it very highly!
Pete Academy
Go the whole hog and have a Roscoe.
bubinga5
That Jabba looks killer.... Not sure if Petes suggestion of a Roscoe is within your budget... nice though... what you want active/passive/\JJ/MM/PJ..?. a Squire is a great suggestion but your not really sure of what your getting, quality wise.. With that budget i would go for a Lakland Skyline.. JO or 55-02..amazing basses.. why not second hand..you can get basses for 1/2 the price... Thought you'd had a Ray5?
ive got to agree with Mart here..a Ray 5 is just biblical when it comes to the B string, quality, playability..no other better 5 have i played..period... i would even go as far to say the ray was better than the Sei..in other ways of course.. JTUK
The Exotic looks ok..and the Jabba or MM 5 second, out of the choices. I'd put a Lakalnd JO/DJ in the mix but the DJ is a discontinued line, of course. This is from the pics supplied, I would have to inspect them all very closely, but then I am sure you'll do that anyway.. I am not sure I'd pay £1300 for any of them though. Some wouldn't make that money anyway.
Musicman20
Stingray or Sterling 5. Without a doubt with your love for Rays you will love the modern 5 ers they make. It took me months to choose, and wow did I make the right decision. For £1300-£1400 you can have a very sw***y model, eg HS/HH and upgraded guard. stingrayPete1977
First of all well done for the good behaviour everyone! All good posts with no silly bitchin' Where shall I start? Bubinga Im hitting the musicians 0% 9 payment deal so its going to be new (I know, I know, But I can afford it and I will probably pay it off sooner if the gigs are aplenty with something to show for the good and bad 2011 gigs) After the tax gets paid obviously Ou7shined and Liam The Squier is tempting and it will be first to be tried if we end up at guitar guitar in Birmingham, As far as a present for the wife her favourite thing is money in the bank to look at! Hence leaving it in there and going 0%, best of both worlds! Martthebass Well Ray 5 new is too much money and Im not 100% on them you know? I know im a bit of a Ray nut but I do like other stuff too mainly Jazz style ATM. JTUK That Xotic is so nice in the flesh it really knocked us over at Bassday but its just too much cash for a below average 5'er like me! As for the Lakland thats already on the shortlist and the reason for going to guitar guitar if I dont like anything Mark has and as for the £1300 thats just my sort of max rather than a set figure and Im sure Poptart will do me a great deal! Pete Roscoe will be too much money but I do like them so one day you never know but right now it might just be a big 34" thumb rest! Gusto I do like the look of the G&L and its a good price so if it sounds good and plays good enough it stands the best chance right now, Remember I dont really know what I will find comfortable in a 5 yet which could sway it all over the place. I will have a google of the MTD though,Ta Musicman20 Long term possibility is a Classic Ray 5! If all went well and none of my other basses get used then if the lot went I would have enough money for one and just keep my Squier jazz as a backup or maybe whatever I buy on saturday.Thats way off right now though so who knows maybe a trade for a second hand Ray 5 next year for one of my other basses, Who knows? JMT Im really liking the look of the Mayones and if it were made in the USA instead of Poland I bet they would be twice the price so it could be a good deal? Is that everyone? I think I have made enough contradictions in this thread and about others I have been involved in (5 strings for a start ) but thats life and at least it shows Im open minded to change. I will keep everyone updated and Im off for rehearsal using a borrowed OLP Tony Levin 5 maybe for the last time? Thanks guys.

Cat Burrito
I've not owned a 5 string but if I did it'd either be a Jazz 5 or more likely a Ray 5. It's not on the cards but you never say never

JTUK
The SH Lakland got the most of my interest. Good looker and the Pre will help out but it is nice to have the option of passive. I have had my current gigging stable for a year now and am just beginning to wring out really nice tones that fit me. Of course, the bass sounded great from the start, IMV, which is why I bought them, but now my sounds and style is really in there in tune with the bass. So I would think the option of both modes is desirable. Plus, I think you wouldn't loose too much on that JO if you had to move it on...not that I like the idea of giving up on a bass after such a short time, otherwise you haven't done enough homework. Subject to playing them all, of course.
stingrayPete1977
Well I have just got in from having a bash with Dave Barron (see below) and played his OLP 5 all night without too much trouble, In fact going back to my Jazz for a quick blast was actually more confudling! Proper confused now but maybe gassing for a RAY 5 how predicatble am I? Proof will be in the pudding but going to 5 isnt feeling like an issue after one full night of staying with it rather than just for the songs I need it for. In fact Im a bit upset at the thought of not wanting to use any of my 4's after I get one, Keep an eye in the FS for a nice EBMM
stingrayPete1977
I will try that Lakland JO JTUK it would be a good choice and the DJ5 I have tried before was real nice until someone put the action super low and I couldnt play it anymore (EBS_Freak). I have also used a 55-02 before that I also liked.
