My theatrical side also has a soft spot for "Come what may" from the movie Moulin Rouge.
+1 on the Bonnie Raitt song. Personally, I hate bad salads. I'd like to nominate My Immortal by Evanesence - here's Amy singing it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2qZt8l7Xy8
Bilbo
Emperor Jones by Joe Lovano Lotus Blossom by Duke Ellington (a solo piano performance played after the And His Mother Called Him Bill session. The LP was dedicated to the recently deceased Billy Strayhorn. If you listen, you can hear the band packing up to go home and Duke was playing his own tribute to Strayhorn. The engineer kept the tape running and captured a very moving ballad performance by the Duke. Its imperfections add to the magic).

KevB
Not had chance to check all previous posts so sorry if this one has already come up. Ticks the boxes for both sad and beautiful for me though:
warwickhunt
There's a certain timbre in RT's voice during a part in this song that brings a lump to my throat and the general feel, lyric content, etc. that just gets me.
Mykesbass
Dexter Gordon's version of Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry, played so lyrically you don't even need Sinatra's vocal version!

Clarky
OK, Norwegian jazz time! "Topplue Votter and Skjerf" by Terje Rypdal, Miroslav Vitous and Jack deJohnette is a truly beautiful, haunting track (which makes me think of fjords and misty mornings, but thats just me!). But what really makes it is the double bass playing by Miroslav Vitous, which I think has to be my favourite ever piece of DB playing. Here is a link to a free (slightly lower quality than MP3) version. Just click on "Prelisten Track" http://ligamusic.com/Lyrics/2943917/Terje_...f/download-mp3/
dbass
My Ashes - Porcupine Tree: Awesome keys on this track. Great atmosphere too, love it. Forgotten Hopes - Anathema: This band and particularly this song mean a hell of a lot to me, cracking track. All is Full of Love - Bjork: She's just haunting and even though this isn't her most "atmospheric" song it gets me every time. Music for a Nurse - Oceansize: Sheer brilliance and completely beautiful. Probably got a few more but these spring to mind as my top 4! NickH
k d lang's version of "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen Find the River by REM Full of Grace by Sarah McLachlan I don't know if it has a name, but the piece of music by Greg Edmonson at the end of the Firefly episode "The Message" is just beautiful. In an interview he said that the crew all knew that the show was getting canned by that point, so he wrote the piece not only to fit the mood of the scene but as a goodbye to the whole show. Gets me every time.

krth1985
In Loving Memory by Alter Bridge deserves a mention. Especially the version below, live in Amsterdam. cetera
For me it doesn't get any more sad/beautiful/poignant than the following: For anyone who thinks that KISS is just a dumb yank rock band... check this 'unplugged' track out, especially Paul Stanley's vocals... stunning... One of the best guitar solos of all time... middle and end of song... and this has me in tears EVERY TIME within the first 30 seconds....
