Never liked Bass Guitarist, indifferent to Bass Player, prefer Bassist. I also hate "Plays the Bass" too, not sure why, just hate "the" in that context, "Plays bass" is fine, just hate "The Bass" for some reason. Maybe I'm weird.

If talking to a musician, bassist.

If talking to a non-musician, bass guitarist - if you say bassist, you just receive quizzical looks, and you can see that thought behind their eyes "whats that then?".

I prefer to be called a musician first.
If I have to specify,I refer to myself as a bass player. I'd never say 'bass guitarist' as that is only part of what I do as a bass player.
