Owen
I realise that any recording can be art and art is not about perfection, but about communicating. I realise that we have no right to judge other peoples playing. Having said that, I teach on a music course and I am compiling a list of recordings which have mistakes in them to develop the critical listening skills of my students. I did this a couple of times on the 'pit and possibly here (or wherever we were at the time). Could you point me in the direction of your favourite mistakes? TIA
bass_ferret
I've made a few, but then again, too few to mention.
LukeFRC
can you have mistakes in original compositions? theres an alarm clock that goes off in "Day in the life" which wasn't planned....
ARGH
Noel redding goes into the intro riff during the fade out of "Fire" by mistake Chas Chandler reckoned no-one would notice it,so it stayed.
Guest Jecklin
not a mistake in terms of "oops I played that wrong", more in the sense of an oversight in terms of preparation before a recording: The bass drum pedal squeaks the whole way through sex machine by James brown. Once you hear it you can never block it out. I'm a BIG fan of incidental sounds in recordings. I hate over produced studio "purity", prefering a more spacious and realistic (less accurate?) live room sound, I like hearing the mechanics of how a sound is produced. Ie key clicks from wind instruments etc etc That said I just can't hack listening to this track anymore.
JoeS
Sting falling on the piano and then laughing at the beginning of Roxanne by The Police immediately springs to mind.

And they left it in!! All the guitar and vocal parts of Broken Dream by Python Lee Jackson. It was only a demo until Rod hit the big time! Freuds_Cat
I've heard tell that the seeming improvisation of the guitar intro to Smoke on the water on Made in Japan (or was it Europe....cant remember) was unintended thereby making it a royal cockup/impro. haha yep that Trevor Boulder one is a beauty. ARGH
"We are the roadcrew" By Motorhead... The guitarfeedback is Eddie Clark flat on his back laughing at the lyrics

Jean-Luc Pickguard
Not a playing mistake, but something that ended up on the released version that usually goes unnoticed: On Hey Jude at 2:58, one of the band says "f'kin' 'ell" under the vocals. cetera
There's an obvious wrong note on the acoustic (?) guitar on Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells....
andy67
Bon Scott (RIP) on a bootleg AC/DC recording was too pissed to sing the verse in high voltage...the band kept playing for about three minutes before he was able to begin and even then he was all over the place....god bless him! Deep Thought
There's the little 'F*ck!' at the beginning of Green Day's 'Good Riddance'.
Alien
Sting seems to lose his place at one point during 'So Lonely', where he plays the wrong change and cuts it short - I think it's during the lead break IIRC. Andy

jakenewmanbass
there is a nose whistle on the intro to Caroline i see you' on James Taylors October Road album don't know if you consider it a mistake, but its extraneous.
gypsymoth
"full of mistakes and wonderful" couldn't agree more - one of the wonderful things about music is that there is no injury or harm caused by mistakes, and often a benefit. pretty risk free compared to structural engineering, medicine, skateboarding, or paiting the eaves on your house. Cheap Thrills, Big Brother and the Holding Company. the record that made Janis Joplin, and it wouldn't have happened without that band and record, which has been torn to pieces by those favoring technical proficiency. Old Horse Murphy
Not sure what album, but Hendrix covering Van the Man's "Gloria": " Gloria, G.O.L.R.I.A" Ella Fitzgerald live at Ronnie Scotts completely forgetting the chorus to "The very thought of you". The absolute pro that she is manages to not only rescue it but get huge laughs too!! Edited January 17, 2008 by Old Horse Murphy
Bilbo
If I recall correctly, there is a blooper in Jimmy Page's guitar solo on 'Stairway To Heaven'. Two decades since I listened to it so not 100% sure. Can anyone conform (I don't have a copy)?
P-T-P
There's a bit of a ham-fisted note (not wrong as such, but not what was intended) played by Adam Clayton at around the 3.40 mark on the track "Love Rescue Me" from U2's Rattle and Hum album. cheddatom
Primus! Between the Les and Herb (or is it brain? the 1st one) they must have 50 recorded mistakes, at least. I could try to write some down, but, i'd be risking ruining the CDs for myself.
ARGH
Latter half of "New dawn fades" by Joy Division,Hooky jumps the descending riff half a bar to early. really throws the rest of the band out for a few seconds.
