Chris2112 Posted December 27, 2010 Share Posted December 27, 2010 One of my mates is a massive Morrissey/Smiths fan, so I've had plenty of time to play their songs with him. I was the one who persuaded him to get a guitar so the least I can do is play along while he gives it the big licks on his stratocaster. There is a nice section near the end where the bass and drums just play together and then the drums just do a few bars on their own...it gives you a nice space to thump out the bassline and try out any fills you've been thinking of. I always play this one with my fingers and the bridge pickup on solo, digging in hard over the pickup for a bright burpy sound. Not the usual gritty picked sound of the records but an interesting way of doing it all the same! It doesn't bother me if others find him amazing, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I just will never be 'won over' by Morrissey. Just watch the video Nick posted, where his is flouncing about the stage like a bloody idiot. He is the person I think of whenever I hear people on this site complaining about idiotic, over-indulged frontment annoying everyone with their antics. I very much doubt he has a lack of respect for his band..not quite sure where you got that from...? hes a great musician who has come along way.. i agree with Doctor J.. he has character and is passionate and it shows.. Oh yeah Gallagher, possibly the stupidest human being alive...everything i hate about an attitude is with that ermm...moron.. glad i dont have to switch on the tv and see that guy anymore.. The only thing stopping The Smiths from being a really GREAT band is Morrissey. Paul Heaton is very much an underrated singer/songwriter and has written songs that are as important and relevant today as they were when they were written (such as 'Five Get Over Excited' and lyrics like "Feigning concern, a conservative pastime, Makes you feel doubtful right from the start"). However, whilst The Housemartins mixed their clear political views with a rather cynical sense of humour, The Smiths had their messages tainted by Morrissey's awful vocal styles and huge ego. [u][b]IMO[/b][/u] I would like to add, I am not (in ANY way) disputing the fact that the instrumentalists in The Smiths were fantastic musicians and songwriters. I just feel that Morrissey in The Smiths is like putting dog poo in a Steak and Ale pie. Criminal. I remember being around a friends house one drunken evening; she raved about this new band and played me "Reel around the fountain" - just knocked me out. Love him or loathe him, Morrisey is a frontman par excellance, and he and Johnny Marr had their finest songwriting moments together. However, I have a Best Of Jools Holland DVD where Morrisey and a great backing band are doing a song called "You have Killed me" Which I think is a great song!
