Any Vintage Speaker Experts Here - Project Cab

Just won this on Ebay for £20 - don't think it was listed quite correctly - one of those random searches that are worth doing every now and again. Just took my fancy at that price with the nice vintage vibe. Will put a couple of neo Celestions I've got into it and see where we go from there. May be back looking for ideas on porting later.

OK, just collected and opened it up to reveal:

One place in Guildford (Ampaholics) has something that sounds very similar for up to £399! Anyone here know about such things?

Cheers,
Mike
I'd ask about on a vintage amps forum, some of them love Goodmans speakers, but might be only certain ones.
Yes, will do when I've got some daylight to take better pictures - trouble is, their seem to be a lot of variants all using the same name. Seems like the Shadows crowd love them. Will see what I can find out.

I remember the speakers well from the very early 1970's. At the time the choice of speakers was very limited and the Goodmans were my favourite at the time. They were more reliable than Celestions and Fanes and had a reasonably flat response. In those days horn drivers were either unreliable or very expensive so most speakers were expected to be full range and many had a little cone stuck to the bigger speaker. I used the 15" version a lot in PA designs.

Speakers of this vintage failed often because the glues holding the voice coil together often melted. I wouldn't put too much power through these. You might find someone who is restoring some vintage gear who would love to get hold of these if they are working.

+1 on the Matamp, looks like an extension cab for the guitar combo, nice piece. Not many manufacturers bothered to paint inside their cabs too.

Edit, I did initially think Hiwatt and looking close I think it's a Hiwatt, notice the white piping over the sides, Matamps go around the cab and the Hiwatt like yours goes across the top into the front.

Well this is getting more interesting than I thought!

I've now taken some more pictures in daylight (or what passes for daylight with today's drizzle and fog) and uploaded them to photobucket. Hopefully included any details which might lead to a definitive identification: http://s1137.photobucket.com/albums/n512/M...;cpZZ1QQtppZZ20

Thanks for all your help so far,
Mike

Ah, now I notice Hiwatts all have a heavy ( double thickness ) bull nose front edge like Marshall cabs.

I did a similar thing a couple of years ago when I won a Vox Super Foundation 2x15" with no speakers for £91. I was going to buy drivers for it and had them all specced after using WinISD but then decided to fire it on Ebay to see what it would go for. £360 was the answer. Probably not the best time of year to do that but do your homework and you could get a good price if you can attract the right buyer.

:)
I think I looked at 'speaker box' hoping to find some empty cabs! Never tried your suggestion - looks like it may reveal more about you than you intended :) Thanks for the info on the Vox, Im waiting to get a couple of dealers to appraise this one.
