The best way to determine ya' favourite bass

Bugger!

I broke the top nut on my Yamaha BB414 by changing the strings...one half of the slot where the G string sits simply came off and flew off under the crimble tree!

On closer examination there was a very little ding in the corner of the broken part, so I assume, I must of hit something with it on a sweet spot and stressed the nut, but being the 'plucky' little thing the BB is, she finally gave out only when I went to fit some of Ernie Balls finest.

I glued the missing bit back on with the trusty Superglue and all seems fine, popping on that G string hasn't broken the nut yet, but have ordered a new nut for it........................... the dimensions are interestingly, the same as makes no difference, as a Fender Jazz ...although the actual BB neck is bigger.

So since Cristmas Eve I've played my [b]Fender [/b]which was nice, my [b]VMJ[/b] which now seems too small on the neck, and the uber classic 1980's [b]Ernie Ball 2 EQ StingRay [/b]that is on loan again...

...but nothing could replace the BB...everytime I saw her hanging on her wall hook I felt gutted, "why not the VMJ, or the Fender" getting her up and running again is like getting into my old jeans, soooooo comfy and simply wonderful...

So that's how I found out which is the [b]real keeper [/b][i][/i]for when the recession bites even more and the kids need feeding....it maybe an expensive way to find out though, I never said the method was perfect

PS any tips on nut replacement very welcome

I broke my nut on my only Fender Precision a few years ago. It's a common problem and a quick fix. It shouldn't cost too much in your local shop to repair if you are unsure about carrying out the repair yourself. Mine is still going strong 16yrs later!

As you've done it, I'd go for an upgraded part like Bone or Graphite. It still shouldn't cost more than a tenner plus whatever the shop charge you to fit it. You can have a go youself but if it's your first time on your favourite bass I'd personally opt for getting it done professionally. You could always get a pro set up at the same time for a bit extra.
