Just a quickie - if I use a 500 watt head into a 1,000 watt 8 ohm cab (therefore receiving approx 300 watts max) cause any problems with the cab?
Hi Alan,

There's no probs with this set up.. Only that some cabs/speakers need to be driven quite hard to achieve the best tone. The speakers in the cab you're talking of would be really highly rated so you're not going to be able to drive them that hard. So, have a listen - if it sounds good then great! The plus side of course is that everything will be operating well within it's boundaries so you will have happy gear in that respect.

Hi Al, for me that's the ideal set up. You can do what you want with the amp and the speakers will just be ticking over giving you quality tone. If you find you need more a second cab will only make a good rig better.

This..

If this set-up didn't work really well..I'd be thinking you have a crap amp and cab.

If you can't get a monster tone out of that...then something is seriously wrong.
Tone being subjective and all that, and it might not be what you really want..but in no way should it be bad.
