It's only been a month since I picked up my Vintera Telecaster Bass so I wasn't expecting any more incomings, but I spotted this online and the price was too good to pass up. A 2010 Squier Classic Vibe 50s Precision Bass in butterscotch blonde. I'd wanted one for a few years but they don't come up very often. It's in 9/10 condition with just a couple of tiny dings in not-very-visible places. I restrung it with a set of flats I had in my parts box and it plays very nicely and sounds pretty good to boot.

I had one of those a few years back and to my surprise it had a quarter sawn neck! Does yours have one as well?

I had to Google exactly what a quarter sawn neck was as I've seen it referred to but never really knew what it meant, but it seems like it is. The grain runs vertically/slightly in the diagonal when I look at the end of the headstock and heel

Well if you can’t buy a SH bar the white version you get a mim one painted up, not a kick in the arse colour wise but the flakes aren’t as big as his. Can’t moan really 👍

Picked up this vintera ii 50s p bass a couple of months ago; great instrument, though the big neck took a little getting used to!

!!!This is NOT a Precision Bass!!!, and even short scale, and that is even sub-short scale, just 28.6" scale length, which though would be the same scale length as the discontinued Fender Precission Jr., or the current production Squier Mini Precision, basses.

 

And it does have an EMG Geezer Butler P pickup installed, wired directly to the output jack socket, though in reverse orientation, which I prefer for the balance it gives across the strings, rather than emphasizing the difference, as the traditional orientation of a P actually does.

 

But also I did entirely remove the J pickup.

 

My point with this however is that I do love the sound of P pickups.

 

Not growly like J pickups, and with a somewhat more limited frequency range, but fatter, punchier, snappier, and somewhat raunchier/cheekier than J pickups, definitely slightly more compressed tone, though usually still fairly sensitive to playing dynamics compared to regular humbucker pickups.

 

And they just sound good.

 

Compared to J pickups they are far from as picky about strings, EQ settings and amps/cabs, perhaps because of the narrower frequency range and slightly more compressed tone, they will sound good almost regardless what you throw at them or what you run them into.

 

So here's my not very faithful or authentic impersonation of a Precision Bass, but the closest I got to the real thing, and very much loved, my Ibanez GSRM20B Mikro Bass, named "Dud Bottomfeeder":

Long story as to the why and the how, but very happy nonetheless. Original 1971 in all it's glory, weighs slightly less than the Titanic but is a joy, plays like butter and sounds like the Precision sound in your head. Bought for s very specific project that I'm now very glad I chose 👍

Got a set of new strings for my AVII precision. Can't believe the originals are still on it after 15 months. Replacing with the same fender nickels as three festivals over next two weekends.

Cancel that... I've opened the case and realised I brought my Squier Standard Jazz by mistake. It's got mutes so a waste to put on brand new strings.

 

Other bass is Epiphone Embassy... still bright stainless strings. So instead I recutthe nut and tweaked the bridge to improve action at the bottom of the nut and get rid of slight buzzing along the g string.

Not my bass, but this lovely ~1961 P-bass is possibly the prettiest I've ever come across. Paul has had it, if not from new, at least since the 70s. Lovely patina and natural wear, the scratchplate is gently rippled without splits. Paul uses a really thumping warm tone with a bit of natural overdrive through a Markbass combo. Last night he was out with Junior Hacksaw, but he also plays with the legendary Snatch it Back.

 

My partner says most men would be in trouble if they looked at a woman like I was looking at this bass...

Took a punt on this Vintera II Early 60's model just under a month ago, the neck shape has took a bit of getting used too, but it's a lovely thing, Fender Ensenada have really upped their game over recent years.
