Jam
Why is it, in somewhere like Oxford with a young music scene along with scores of academics, is it so hard to find a decent bass teacher that isn't just a guitar teacher teaching bass on the side? I've met a few good teachers, one in particular who focuses mostly on Jamerson material who is a phenomenal teacher, but he can't take me on at the moment. I was looking to get a good handle on theory (and reading in particular) in the New Year but I now have to find someone else. Has anyone here had a lesson with a guitarist teaching bass? I'm reluctant to do so...I'm sure there are good teachers but I'd much rather learn from someone with bass as their primary instrument.. oldslapper
Jam, if you're looking for reading & theory in particular at this time, and you can't find a decent bass tutor in your area, then go to a piano teacher......seriously.

Dood
It's funny you should say that actually Jam, because it appears as a Bass Teacher in Norwich, I am in a serious minority! Lots of guitarists teaching Bass though.
Soliloquy
You're what, an hour or so from London ? Try Steve Lawson.
Delberthot
Teaching Jamerson? I never heard of the fellow until I was 19. As long as you're learning that's the main thing
Bilbo
Teaching using Jamerson. Bit of a narrow field in my view. It doesn't begin or end with Jamerson....
thepurpleblob
Seek out a guy called John Doole (last seen in Oxford). He is most definitely a guitar player who happens to teach bass but he still has a real feel for bass, has a deep understanding of the blues and of theory and is dead easy to get on with. EDIT: Here you go http://www.thetutorpages.com/tutor/john-do...-tuition-oxford Edited January 3, 2011 by thepurpleblob
