Ive been listening to alot of jamiroquai lately and love playing alot of their tunes, but i want ot find more bands with that bass groove, sort of funky aswell.

Im not looking for actual funk bands like funkadelic or TOP or Earth wind and fire.

I was also reading the Neo soul thread and really liked the youtube links posted by bubinga5. Erykah Badu i think her name was.

Any recommendations.

Thanks
Sam H

Hi Sam,

My immediate reaction was to recommend pre-disco Kool & the Gang or Fatback Band, but they might be too much like full on jazzy funk.
Maybe Gil Scott Heron

or Labie Siffre

Hi Sam, and welcome,

A few suggestions from me:
Brand New Heavies
Incognito
Freak Power
Ivan Neville & Dumpstaphunk
Raw Stylus
and my band, Harambé, is also heavily influenced by Jamiroquai, and has a new EP out right now: Harambe, Reboot, on iTunes

You could also try working the other direction: have a listen to Stevie Wonder's 70s albums (Innervisions, Talking Book, Songs In The Key Of Life, Fulfillingness' First Finale) and see where Jay Kay got a large amount of his inspiration from ...

Some of "The Crusaders" and "Roy Ayres" tracks have bass like what you asked for, to my ears at least

This is very much in the vein of that Erykah tune... Possible the funkiest intro to an album ever.. Live and original version..

you gotta wait for 4.00 till it gets juicy.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJbNJJNDdUU&feature=fvst

Just to correct Bub's spelling (Eumir Deodato), could also try T-Connection, The Sound Stylistics, Nils Langren, Pleasure and JD73 as a few more ideas.

If it's Jamiroquai that has started you on this discovery then you might want to check out one of the 'Late Night Tales / Another Late Night' series of albums with JK choosing some of the songs that have influenced him. You'll find a few mentioned here plus people such as Dexter Wansel, Kleer and a few others.
