Pkomor
I didnt really want to start a whole new thread about this, but I thought I was worth a shot! Has anyone tried or even heard a thomman 33 double bass? (made by hora)
janmaat
Yes that would be interesting, I am also pondering about getting a DB better than the monster I own, browsing Thomann who now offer a wider range - anyone any experience?
aonindy
I came *very* close to ordering one of these and would have done had I not ventured into the Den of bass delight that is Mr Tom Barretts shop in Ireland.... Gareth Hughes I think was expounding the virtues of the Thomann 22 which is also a Hora bass I believe. I have also read on Talkbass that the 22/33 has a lot of respect and they are consistantly good quality for what they are. Hope that helps! Allen. Gareth Hughes
Yup - and here's what I said earlier: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?s=&sho...t&p=1067708 And if I'd known about Tom's shop in Galway before I ordered my bass from Ken Smith I could have saved myself a lot of hassle (not from Ken but at customs). leroybasslines
I've heard good things about Thomann basses. Not played a 33 to be honest. I think a lot of them are also made by Gewa and Strunal. The topic of Thomann basses comes up pretty regularly on Talk Bass, so it might be worth searching through the double bass forums over there. This chap Mike seems especially knowledgeable and helpful: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/member.php?u=112313. He's a Greek classical bassist and his knowledge of European basses is pretty impressive. He'll be able to tell you exactly what the bass is and where it's made and probably what it's like. The only worry I have with Thomann is that you can't get to play the bass yourself unless you know someone over here that has got one. I think this is more of an issue with a large acoustic instrument like a double bass than with an electric bass. I bought a Lakland EB online without playing it because I've played other similar basses by them and I could make certain assumptions. Would I do that with a double bass? Not sure...I'd have to have a pretty awesome recommendation by someone I trust implicitly!
Bilbo
I got mine from Gedo Musik (Czech made) by mail order and am perfectly happy with it as a starter bass. From what I can gather, even if you tried a Thomann somewhere in the UK, because of all of the variables involved, it would not guarantee anything in terms of the bass you actually got if you ordered one. My advice is to select one that you can afford and meets the specificiation you think will meet your needs and then order it. If you don't like it, you can always return it. PS my £1.5k bass has already gigged several times with no complaints and there are recordings here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=119653 Its not a £12K Italian bass but it makes a double bass sound and got me gigging. For the record, of my six instruments (4 guitars, 1 electric bass and 1 double bass), 4 were purchased by mail order (including both basses). Just go for it and start making music. TheRev
The bassist in my local jazz collective plays a 22 and it sounds and looks great. I had a 30 minute diddle on it and it didn't seem significantly inferior to the £1.5K Stentor that I rented for a few months. All in all a very well put together and playable bass for £800. FWIW, listening to the sound samples (through decent speakers, natch) on the Thomann website, I think the 22 has a better pizz sound that the 33... IMHO.
