Linus27
Hi, I have just bought a Fender Precision 51' re-issue bass and I fancy changing its the single coil pickup to something better. The ones I have seen are either the, Seymour Duncan Hot for Single Coil P-Bass® SCPB-2 Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound for Single Coil P-Bass® SCPB-3 Does anyone know what difference there would be in these two? They also do a, Seymour Duncan Vintage Single Coil P-Bass® SCPB-1 This sounds very much like what I have already but would this be better than the stock Fender one which sounds a bit wooly? Thanks for any advice.
The Burpster
Linus, I'm not beign flippant when I say this, what do you mean by 'something better'? Do you mean louder? Stronger in specific areas ie low-mid-highs? Or richer in all three areas? Simply the 2+3 have more winds and subsequently more out put..... 2 has std size poles and more winds so sltighty hotter output, 3 (1/4lb) has larger poles and more winds= BIG output great for rock. 1 (vintage has) std size poles and standard wiring offering a new old stock kinda feel.. Does that help? There allsorts of pups available for Ps and SDs might be the best option. Let us know more and we'll flood you with our faves.... Linus27
Hi The Burpster, Volume seems fine apart from the E string sounding quiet but thats probably just setup. I am after better tone. The original pickup just sounds a bit boxey and flat. When I play my ESP Jazz and even my Squire Vintage Frettless, both sound alive, fresh, punchy and exciting. Both sound different but both sound superb and exciting. They are also both passive. The single coil on the precision just sounds hollow, boxey and thin. Top end sound thin, weak and twangy and bottom end sounds boxey, wooly, muffled and thin. The mids seem pretty non existant. Sorry for being dumb but what are winds?? From what your saying the Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound Single Coil P-Bass SCPB-3 will just make it louder and more powerful but not necessarily sound any different to the Hot Single Coil P-Bass SCPB-2??? Toasted
Linus, Wizard pickups get alot of praise around here.
The Burpster
So... the winds are teh copper wire that form the the coil around the poles.... education time.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_coil Sounds like it may do you well to ring Wizard pick ups and tell them what you want, and get some made for the job ..... Frm your description it sounds like Bartolinis would do your job but they are wee bit expensive.... Wizards are sensible money and pretty much custom made... http://www.wizardpickups.co.uk/index.asp Enjoy....
Linus27
Thanks The Burpster. Its funny you mention Bartolinis as this is what I put on my ESP Jazz and its sounds fantastic. Its about 20 years old now and not much has beaten it for sound. So don't mind paying a little more for Bartolinis.

Would you say that Wizard would be a better option than Seymour Duncan? Yourself and Toasted have recommended them so far.
The Burpster
Well, Put it this way, you are buying 'off the shelf' with SD so if it works great, but maybe you'll have to try at least 2 sets 'til you get it right.. Spend some time on the fone or visiting Wizard and describing exactly what you want and you should get it 1st time...... So how much can you chuck at it, or do you like messing about with it? However, I want it to sound better than it does so I might just go for the Seymour Duncan Hot Single Coil P-Bass SCPB-2 and see how that goes.
