I'd rather spend the dosh on another set of strings.

It's not exactly exhausting or time consuming making all those winds around the posts, even for an unfit old codger like me.

I'd rather make sure the strings were wound on properly and take my time than use a machine

You're only supposed to wind the strings around the post 3 times. Call me old fashioned, but how difficult can it be to use your fingers?

Six years ago I toured with a guitarist who put on a new set of strings every night. He'd been doing it for years, since the 60s, and it had become a pre-gig ritual. He managed just fine with his fingers.

Horses for courses? A guitar tech on tour with a large band might find it useful I suppose, but otherwise I agree with the previous comments. It's not exactly a big deal to hand-wind strings - especially if it's a four-stringer!

I suppose it's more for guitarists - I know mine has a lot of windings more than my bass string.

Handy if you break a string mid set and dont have a backup bass. Other than than that I dont use mine. (Battery screwdriver + planet waves attachment)

We've had one of these in our shop for months, but I never use it. After doing thousands of string changes over the years, I prefer to use my fingers.

If I were a guitar repairman in a shop it would be quite nifty. Other than that it would not be much use.
They also make one of these that tunes it to the right pitch.
