wesfinn
OI...I have a matching headstock P bass Vintage Schmintage correct....It looks damn cool tho! but just for you duncan I will leave it plain on this one The lack of white primer showing through was just how it ended up..being the first colour over colour I've attempted things didn't go excatly as planned ( I was expecting it to go that way though)...but I am well pleased with how it looks. I may do a bit more on the front so that theres more of the fiesta red showing through on the forearm *also like to add that I wanted to keep the finish as thin as possible on this (unlike Herbies) so the white primer layer was hard to keep intact in large amounts. I just didn't want to sacrifice the tone of the beautiful piece of Alder that i used by piling finish up on it. BassBod
Vintage Schmintage - well put. Load of old bollo anyway...if you'd pay for it, I'm sure Leo and co. would do it! I'm guessing white primer was a lot cheaper and more plentiful than colour paint stock...so it was sprayed thicker to get an even base for the final few coats. I think the way Herbie's has ended up looking union jack/stars and stripes, with more than a hint of weathered floorboard, is very charmingly random. Nice one. wesfinn
Haha...yeah Leo is probably having a good old laugh at our expense for buying into the 'vintage' thing! I'm thinking of keeping this bass now. I have a full set of early 60's hardware for this bad boy...coupled with the Suhr pickups and a slim 60 profile neck I'm (getting around to) making. Should be a killer sounding bass when its done!
wesfinn
heres a couple of shots with the repro mint guard and the original 60's hardware on the body I'm excited about theis now...need to finish the neck..if only there were more days in a week! wesfinn
Ok so I have finished the relicing on the body and have put a temporary all parts neck onto the bass until I get a few sapre days to finish making the one I have started. I have gone with Suhr vintage pickups which are absolutely fantastic on the stack know circuit. It weighs 9lbs with the allparts neck which isnt particularly nice so Im hoping it will be just under 9lb with my flamed neck! Sounds incredible too and is strung with D'adario chromes flats. Heres some pictures. I am extremely happy with how this has turned out.

Any chance of some sound clips?
Mike
Wes, it's outstanding! I think I definitely want one! I'd say YES to the matching headstock - it would look fabulous. And as you've said, this is an "inspired by.." bass, not a direct copy (although the relicing looked spot on!).
51m0n
Nice job Wes! Are you going to get some tapewounds for the real Herbie vibe though?? Honestly never heard anythiong else sound like his bass and I reckon its mainly because no one else uses those strings....

If I decide to sell this after all I will put them on if the person wants them.

wesfinn
so heres the bass all finished. I didn't have time to make a neck for this in the end so I decided to use a modified American Vintage 62 neck which I purchased off Clarky. I have put the fingerboard join radius in and slightly reshaped the back of the neck, refinned with nitro and aged. the fingerboard is lovely and dark too! The bass has all the old early 60's hardware on it now including a 62 bridge, 62 tuners, 61 string tree, all early 60's screws, 59 thumb rest etc. (thanks to 99ster for who I purchased a lot of the hardware from) so here it is. I always heard they were Herbie's string of choice. Edited March 25, 2011 by gjones

I do have some trubass strings for it however I really don't like the feel or tone of them personally, this is going to be a bass that i will gig a fair amount so the strings need to be right for me. Clarky
Looks fab, Wes! Out of interest why did you take the Fender decal off? It was a real Fender neck after all! I imagine you will have a few cheeky PMs making offers on this. Great work

I just had to strip the original finish off the face of the headstock to make the radius where the rosewood and maple meet.
