Covers bands are not poor relations to "Original" bands. Done properly they are fun, a very good learning experience, will make you a better player and widen your horizons. They will show you how to work with an audience instead of the "take it or leave it" attitude of many "Original" bands.
Jaco, Marcus Miller, Sting and Paul McCartney started in cover bands and Victor Wooten still plays covers with Bela Flek. Why do you have to ask!!!! Do it!

Studying and learning the covers [b]is[/b] study that supports your originals band. Even the masters learned some of their skills by copying earlier masters.

Sounds like a great opportunity if he really is just asking you to fill in once in a while and not be out gigging with the band several nights a week.

Just in case no one has said this before... DO IT!

(Only joking I know everyone is saying this!)

It'll give you experience in different directions, plus it'll give you experience in juggling various time and band commitiments. Important stuff for a working muso.

Funny thing is I also play with a fella called Joel White now and again, and I came across your Joel White's webpage the other day when I googled my Joel White ..... must be a common name .
Here a Joel ,there a Joel ,everywhere a Joel Joel White lol

If you don't do it someone else will and they'll get paid, enjoy themselves, gain experience, pull birds... no the last bit is a lie, it never happens to the bassist :)
