Marvin Posted January 16, 2011 Share Posted January 16, 2011 After Thursday night, trying out for a band in a garage I think I definitely need a stand. I had to leave my bass propped against my amp stood on a concrete floor. which I didn't like one bit. Any recommendations, preferably I need it to fold down flattish. I don't particularly want to spend a fortune on one. Some of the stands I've looked at say they are not suitable for nitro finishes. I haven't a clue how mine is finished, it's an Ibanez sr300, I don't think it's nitro as I'm assuming such a finish would make an instrument a little more expensive. But I'm just guessing. I went on a mission to buy an acoustic guitar stand for a friend's birthday recently, I found it's worth trying a few to get one that's sufficiently stable. A few tripod-only designs like the one above I found were a bit dicey stability-wise, it doesn't take much pushing for the instrument to topple diagonally back. Plus if they don't actually hold the neck then although slippage isn't normally a problem thanks to the rubber grips, it's very easy to balance the instruments on them at a bad angle so that they fall more easily. I don't like the mini types that don't grip the neck, no good for heavy basses or ones that are have assymetrical bottoms. The Ultimate Support one looks good too. I don't particularly like the Hercules stands.On mine,the gripping mechanism broke after a couple of months,and I found it to be quite easily knock-over-able. Fretless Eric Posted January 25, 2011 Share Posted January 25, 2011 (edited) It is worth considering that stands exist for a purpose of making your instrument readily accessible, either at home, practice or a gig and it's prime role is not to protect the instrument - no stand can prevent knocks or potential falls and long term hanging on a rubber hanger may also affect the finish. [font="Arial Black"]The best stand is to put it away in the case[/font]. Not to put a dampner on things, I suggest you think about why you want a stand in the first place. Marvin Posted January 25, 2011 Author Share Posted January 25, 2011 I've gone for the Hercules Mini. Thanks for all the advice and help. The Hercules does exactly what I want from it. It's not for permanent use but while practicing and gigging (when that eventually happens). Hence I wanted something that folded down as small as possible, it does that, and that is obviously stable. The bass I've got isn't asymmetric so it sits well in the Hercules and it doesn't seem to suffer any problems regards stability so I'm very happy. It had another velcro strap attached to it to fasten to the neck. Held a guitar in place tight to your rig, so less in the way on a crowded stage. Tried one that seened to be fine with a Jazz sat on it, but it was very close to the balance/tipping point for the SB-900, so I ruled it out. P.
