Clarky
As so many people sell Fenders and Squiers on BassChat, I thought it might be useful to flag up the Fender Serial Dater Project - a website which allows you to date your instrument based purely on its serial number and country of origin (so need to pull off the neck unless you need a very precise date). Hope this helps! http://www.guitardaterproject.org/fender.aspx
Cat Burrito
It's not the best one though. I've seen this one before and just tried it again. My MIJ 51RI which is circa 2008 is according to that site 1994. It really isn't though. It's a guide but I think the Japanese ones tend to confuse the system a bit
Lozz196
Yeah, the book I have even states that the MIJ Fenders can be a bit difficult to date re serial numbers. For Mex & US tho, they are fairly straightforward (or seem to be there`s bound to be an anomaly somewhere). Good site though, just tried all mine, and they all came in as they should have. SS73
For Japanese instruments, this is the best one I've found and it also deals with the newer confusing MIJ numbers. FlatEric
Mornin' all. DATING LATER FENDER CIJ. Anyone got any ideas yet? I've got a 57/62 CIJ "P", that I am thinking of selling but can't date it. Where ever I look, the dating seems to stop at around 2004/2005. Look forward to a deluge of replies. Cheers.

harvey1-8
Not sure about my Jap Jaz either. I was pretty sure I bought it new in 1997 but the resources above are telling me it's an 86-87 model. Mine is a '75 RI Jazz. Made in Japan. Serial is A+6 digits. Maybe it has something to do with it being a reissue and using a MIJ decal on the headstock? Roland Rock
Strange - works fine for mine. Did you tick in the "country of manufacture" section?
madanglian
Does it have "Crafted In Japan" near the base of the neck Harvey? The kenji-cij blogspot thingy site shows A0+5 digit serial numbers for CIJ instruments made between 1997-8. My CIJ '75RI Jazz has a serial number P0+5digits which (correctly I assume) shows manufacture between 1999-2002. Apparently the Marcus Miller and Geddy Lee sig versions had more random serial numbers but not the RI's. I am trying to find out whether my '75 RI was made by Dyna or Tokai but none of these sites seem to know. The site which was linked to in the OP reckoned Fuji made mine which I don't believe as the whole rationale for calling them "Crafted" was an agreement with Fuji, basically meaning "Made in Japan but not by Fuji"
Beno
Found this one recently. Seems good. Lots of info for the old gear. Its confirming what I suspected with my P. Not 76, but a very early 75. Joshbasscana
I am trying to establish the date of my Fender P Bass. Ive been told its between a late 70's and early 80's but Im really not sure. The neck plate has a number on it - 626410, but Im not sure if this is anything to go by? Is there anything else that can give me a clue to the true date of this P bass? Cheers. NeilMorrell
I'm currently having restored a 197? Fender Musicmaster Bass. It had been mistreated as a pup, and when I bought it in 1989, was in a fairly sorry state. Sadly, after being gigged into the Mid-90s, it was put aside "for restoration". Tis now being done and coming along nicely too. Serial Number is S832608, which is dated by most sites as 78-79. No Neck Date is readable, but in the Pickup Cavity was a paper sticker (which will be going back). It has a narrow red stripe across the top edge, has the initials "LC" followed by a date - 8 May 79. Will take a Pic when I get a mo - certainly before it all goes back together!!!
