eParrot Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 I recently got a '77 Musicmaster and I'd like opinions re a choice of 3 pickups I'm looking into. I don't want to modify anything so I'm going for Seymour Duncan single coil, of which there are 3 kinds: SCPB-1 Vintage, SCPB-2 Hot and SCPB-3 Quarter Pound. http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/bass...cpb1_vintage_f/ http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/bass...cpb2_hot_for_s/ http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/bass...cpb3_quarterpo/ Anyone had any experience with these? I use Daddario Chromes flatwound and I like the mellow thump thing. But the original musicmaster pup is way too mushy. Looking for a more contemporary tone. Best regards Quote
Jean-Luc Pickguard Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 (edited) I put a kent armstrong enclosed cool rails humbucker in mine It sounds punchy almost like a mustang or precision, but looks totally stock. If I had another musicmaster to upgrade I'd not hesitate to get another of these. My daughter's musicmaster has an exposed hot rails which is still punchy but more toppy in sound and although a perfect fit, doesn't look right to me - but she likes it. 2x18 Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 The highly acclaimed ( and expensive ) USA hand made Birdsong short scale basses use Lace Sensor Gold guitar pickups on some of their Basses so might be a good option! Will. Quote

Now i have a choice of four! :-) I like the kent armstrong, I hadn't thought of a dual coil. But I had assumed a bass needs a bass pickup, not a guitar one (which is what the musicmaster has, six magnet poles.) Cheers Quote
