newbass1000 Posted January 23, 2011 Share Posted January 23, 2011 Firstly, apologies if i've posted this in the wrong place, i'm new. Recently I restrung my Squier vmj bass and as I was finishing up i noticed the A string had come loose of it's holder in the nut. I placed it back in but it seemingly refuses to stay in place, coming loose of the nut whenever I attempt to play. I'm not having this problem with any of the other three strings. Jean-Luc Pickguard Posted January 23, 2011 Share Posted January 23, 2011 How is the string stacked on the tuner? Do the windings go down, so the string exits the string post close to the wood? Ou7shined Posted January 23, 2011 Share Posted January 23, 2011 Just FYI, it's good practice to put the end of your string down inside the hole in the centre of you tuner before you start tightening it up - it keeps it all tidy and locked in place. stingrayPete1977 Posted January 23, 2011 Share Posted January 23, 2011 I could be having a daft moment here but is it possible the saddle has flipped over while there was no string on it? making it bend to the side or the string is just totally off the saddle I cant see how it can be anything else. I still suspect it may be exiting the stringpost too high up, particularly after seeing the loose string ends flapping about like a hippy's guitar strings. newbass1000 - where are you located? From your handle it sounds like you're a newbie. I bet a nearby BC regular would be happy to look over your bass & show you how to do a quick setup for a pint or two of ale. icastle Posted January 23, 2011 Share Posted January 23, 2011 Looking at the pics it looks like the A string isn't sat on the bridge saddle - certainly something down that end has gone awry looking at the angle the string is running at. Also, that E string needs a restring - it needs to be wound around the machine head post 2 or preferably 3 times if you want to get it to stay in tune (I always go for 3 but you might not have enough string length as you've already trimmed it). LawrenceH Posted January 23, 2011 Share Posted January 23, 2011 Hard to tell from those pics but it does look to me like the string is coming off the tuning peg towards the top, so there's not enough string angle over the nut to hold it in place. If you restring so that successive windings force the string down as you work towards the bridge end, then as long as you started winding at the bottom of the groove in the tuner it should be ok.
