JJ Bass Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Hi, I've been offered a Hohner B bass, the 4 string active through neck model, is it any good? It has 2 x jazz pick ups, 2 band EQ and the Stienburg bit, but its not headless. I play alot of Jazz Funk (Mark King sort of thing) will this bass be any good for all that? I've heard 'The Jack' on youtube, but never one of these being slapped to hell! What other basses does this compare to and what sort of value? Any help please!! Cheers J Quote

Vinny Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 The only thing I know about the B-bass is that a guy I know used to have a 5 string active one, it was a stunning thing to look at and had a lovely smooth sound or a fantastic growl when dug in hard. I regret not buying it a couple of years ago, in fact. I never heard him do any slappity stuff on it so don't know how they are for that side of things. Not much help, I know! Quote

Not much help, I know![/quote] thanks for that, I'm just not sure what they are worth! Can the twin jazz pick ups be a bit thin sounding? My old Status 1000 was a bit thin sounding... Quote

This is basically the later Jack bass (J pups instead of 'buckers) with a headstock. Considering how much love there is for Jacks, I'm always surprised how little people think of the B. Thu neck, flattish fingerboard, narrow-ish string spacing. Good action. Don't know about jazzes being 'thin' - on more than one occasion I've been told that people have never heard a bass sound so 'bassy' as my B - I believe a lot of reggae guys use Jacks & Bs. I paid £100 for mine used about 6 years ago. Thay tend not to get as much as a Jack. Get it. G. Quote

The only bass I've ever had with twin jazz p'ups was a Status 1000 and from what could get out of it and the guys on YT the sound was quite thin. Fingers crossed on this one J Quote
