I love his playing with UZEB but I've always found his solo stuff to be very "fuzak".

I really like Carons playing aswell, and was one of the first people I thought of.

I can't be bothered to look for links right now,but Jaco,Gary Willis and Marcus all have great
fretless tone.

I'm sorry but his intonation is all over the place, even on the very simple melodies, sharp most of the way through which could be explained by the monitoring or something, but there are no excuses for the awful intonation in the solo section about halfway though. It has completely set my teeth on edge and I need a cup of tea and a rollup now.

Heheh, you should hear my intonation, maybe I've picked it up from Mr Caron. Here's something a little more soothing

Apart from the obvious ones Jaco etc.

I quite like Pino Palladino and Percy Jones' fretless tones.

Pino's playing and tone is just beautiful

I'm not so sure about Percy ...

I've heard Percy Jones sound nicer. I think I heard his playing on Brand X before I heard Jaco.
He's very much got his own style, and I think his sound was assisted by home made pedals (please correct me if I'm wrong, I can't substantiate this)

I did my own sort of warm, punchy enveloping wash on the Pentabuzz with chorus and a little delay. I've heard it before somewhere but can't remember where.

Call me a philistine (just not all at once) but as a fretless player all of the above apart from Mick's stuff sound bloody awful. I guess I'll just never like jazz... :)

Here's the tone I referred to earlier with the Pentabuzz in action. I looked for a better known example but couldn't find one.

Well, his tone is less 'barky farty' sounding than the others...

We've all got to aspire to something. For me it's passion, soul, and precision as demonstrated in this video.

haha adds a whole new dimension to the fretless art - or do I mean fart :)

I don't have access to youtube at the moment so cannot post links to anything specific, but always loved Mark Egan's tone along with Yves Carbonne, Laurence Cottle has a really nice clean mwhaaaaaa tone when he plays fretless. Always loved Pino's sound back in the 80's, esp. with the octaver.

That's lovely, John Giblin on bass I think
