Jazz Bass Hard Case - Which One? / From Where?

I want a lightweight but durable Jazz Bass Hard Case.

Should I get a Hiscox? I really fancied a Fender tweed one, but they are stupid prices for what looks like a weak and not very protective case.

And where is a good place to buy one? ie. good price, quick delivery.

Thank you :)

I've used Hiscox and found them to be good - they're durable, protective and light. Be a bit careful, I've had a couple of AC Js in Hiscox cases and it's a tight fit. The side mounted jack is very snug against the internal padding/foam.

I've also used a TKL rectangular hard plastic case - it's very good in terms of padding and protection and fairly light. It came from the US however and I'm not sure if they're available here in the UK. Another alternative is the newish SKB (supplied with Fenders I think). It looks very good and has high tech catches. It's also pretty light. Not cheap though - Thoman might do a decent deal?

You might also want to consider a good bag - I've owned and used Protec, iGiG, Mono and Protection Racket bags. For me, Protec offer the greatest protection with durable and rigid panels front and back. They're also reasonably priced (about £70 from Thoman). Weight is around 7lbs I think. They really are a good alternative to a hard case and offer a very high level of protection.

I use a Hiscox for my Precision and Jaguar - snug fit at the bottom but never a problem. And have quite literally stood on it - as you know I am no lighweight. I got mine from String's Direct/Holiday Music on advice from Hiscox

+1 for Hiscox. Very lightweight and you can literally stand on them. Best case for the money by far IMO - £67.95 from SoundsLive

I would vote for Hiscox too, I looked various option for my Jazz but after see a friends Hiscox case I was convinced, its much better than a SKB case I have for an Ovation.

If you have any doubts take a look from at the Hiscox website

Got it from Sounds Alive, I don't think you will do better for the money.

Hope this helps.

My US Jazz came with a shaped hard case which I much prefer over the unwieldy rectangular ones. I'm pretty sure it's an SKB and seems very well put together, no complaints at all except the interior 'ribbon' hinges have come loose but that's no big deal for me.

Wow! Great idea.

Unfortunately it's as ugly as the bass player with the BB on the last photo :)

I was really hoping to find a good quality old style or tweed type case, but not the Fender one, my mate's got one and it's falling apart, they're £160 odd too :)

Most of those old style cases weigh a tone.. cant think of a maker who makes em like the Fender ones...i sh*t you not the case weighed as much as the bass..

I have had loads of Hiscox cases over the years, they are solid and I like supporting a British company but I now have the new SKB case: http://www.skbcases.com/music/products/pro...p;c=84&s=75

I dont want to be harsh because Hiscox do make a good product, but I find it a far better case if you own a Jazz in my humble opinion. It's a tighter fit, more space for storing stuff and just feels much better quality. Also the new latches and general appearance makes it look like you about to unpack a Sniper Rifle (not a far leap of the imagination as SKB make stuff for the military).

I'd use a hiscox type case in the car/van and it a decent carry for walking a short distance...but I wouldn't use one on a plane out of choice. I have kept my flights cases back for that reason..only I don't get on planes much... bug..!!!

Just saying, be careful what you want them for.

Yes, quite right. Thanks. Domestic use only, and probably only if going by van or car.

It's really going to just be a nice home for a lovely bass and not leaving the house too often. But if it's a really lightweight case then I don't mind carrying around for my London gigs on the tubes. If my India tour happens I'll be buying a SH Hohner cricket bat and carrying it on the plane in a softcase.
