Russell's only gone over to Ampeg recently. He used an Ashdown ABM combo and either an Ashdown 8x10" stack or a Fender valve stack. I'm not sure if it's my EQ'ing, or whether I'm better off going for a 4x10 instead. Only trouble is now, i'm really weary about what i'm buying. I feel like nothing will be good enough unless I go 8x10. lol I really like a band called The Joy Formidable...and he has an amazing live sound. He uses a MAG 500w 410 combo with a Jaguar. It sounds amazing, although his pedalboard is about the size of a coffin, but I keep thinking theres this bass secret that nobody is letting me in on!! lol Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Saw them play in Manchester last night and they were blinding!... as usual! If transport is no problem(or your back doesn't give you jip), the MAG 4 x 10" is a very good choice. Rhydian gets a great sound out of it! He does have it DI'ed AND mic'd up though. Jenny Lindeberg from Warpaint has also used one of these on that band's last tour over here. Same great sound. So yes, I'd take your ABM 2 x 10" with you as a trade in/part ex for one of those but keep the 15" cab for VERY decent stack. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I heard The Chapman Family were good too? Do you think it's worth spending the extra wedge on an ABM rather than a MAG? I think a cab and seperate head would be the way for me, just so the weight is shared, rather than a combo like Rhydian uses. I haven't listened to much of Warpaint... they any good? They're a lot quieter than TJF aren't they? I've tried to up the bass and drop the treble but then the amp just farts and feels like its gonna pop... like indie says, I think 4x10 might be the way... Will I beable to run a 4x10 with a 1x15? I'm not really up on this ohmage lark. I'm nearly there, but what difference is a 2x10 than a 4x10 in terms of ohms? I've been using Rics for 30 years and have never found a tweeter-loaded cab that they get on with (tell a lie; Accugroove), although YMMV. I borrowed a newer cab to see if it made any difference and that had a switchable tweeter. I'll bear that in mind when I make the purchase. I have played with the EQ for some time now, and I do get a good sound, it just isn't quite loud enough. It's hard to explain, but playing the bass on it's own it's really quiet. If you're too quiet again it could be about eq but it also could be to do with the way you play or,obviously, that you are simply not loud enough for your band (or that your gear can't cope; Rics put out a fair bit of low frequencies, more than most realise). FWIW I once played the Marquee with a 150w Laney power amp and 2 4x10s; IIRC I started with the volume on 3 or so and had to turn down and I'm a very light player (and this was a power pop/rock band) so providing you're eq-d right it shouldn't be that difficult to hear yourself. I spent the bulk of my gigging career using a 150w transistor head into a single 15 with no volume problems whatsoever, competing with guitarists using Marshalls. If you don't want the bulk of a 4x10 you could try a 15. Personally I hate non-defeatable tweeters as all I end up hearing is glass, certainly with my basses. I took on board a lot of what was said on here about boosting mids and it works for me, especially the low mids. Get a lovely bass growl that cuts through the mix. They had to cut a song from their set due to a bass malfunction.(Knackered cables I think.) Still plan to see 'em again in the future though. Warpaint are great IMO, but their brand of all girl prog/shoegaze/post rock/folk/indie rock with layered girl group harmonies is like Marmite. Check out their stuff on Youtube/Hype Machine/Myspace/Soundcloud first and decide for yourself. Now re: ohmage. Must bass cabs(1x12", 1x15", 2x10", 4x10") are rated @ 8 ohms. The larger ones(2x15", 8x10", 6x10", 4x12") are normally rated @ 4 ohms. So, by linking 2 8 ohm cabs together with a speaker cab gives you a 4 ohm cab.
